I was putting in a new air filter and wanted to pull the intake tube. This is what I found . A destroyed turbo and a little piece of a screw . So my question is now what and how much of this made it to the engine? What is the best replacement turbo for a 03 auto 250 hp with edge ez ? I spoke with PDR about their 03-04 modded turbo and it sounds like a good option.

The CAC should've caught most, if not all of the pieces. But, you need to remove the CAC and reverse flush it with water and let dry to make sure.

Pull the air intake elbow from the intake and check for bits of it. Same goes for the tube going to the turbo from the air filter box.

I would just buy a used HE351 turbo (stocker on '04. 5 and up) ~$300 (similar to a pdr upgraded stocker). If you want a stock replacement put the word out and you can probably buy one for $250, that is what I sold my '03 HE 341 turbo for. Good thread on dieseltruckresource.com on the turbo swap.

With your present modifications, you already should get a larger turbocharger than stock. A minor upgrade like a modified stock turbo would not be the best idea. Definitely clean out the intercooler; the procedure is described in TDR Issue 52, p. 98. You should also remove the air intake horn from the cylinder head and look at the grid heater and below it to see if any pieces got that far.

Thanks for all the help. I have the intercooler and all plumbing pulled and cleaned . The turbo went to a turbo shop close by for a rebuild/balance. They said the endplay looks great and when they get into it if all is well I can pick it up Mon. I need to change my sig becuse the TST is not on the truck any longer.

I had a similar incident with one of mine. Turbo shop polished up the compressor housing and put a used wheel in it and back on the road. Just be sure you get the big pieces out of the intercooler.
