We'll, after 1 day and 20 miles, the truck died while running with the COMP on level 2 while accelerating to get on the highway this AM.

It ran great immediately before and after EDGE install, but unfortunately the fuel pump wasn't pressure tested before the install.

What can I do next? Had it towed home... the lift pump primes when you bump the key, but for an extraordinary long time. Then when you try and start... it just keeps turning over.

Called EDGE, they said to prime the fuel pump, as air may be in the line.

How do I do this? I thought I was reasonably handy, but I'm not sure how to accomplish this. What else can I do before breaking down and bringing to dealer?

If it is the fuel pump [and I hope not] once it is replaced, will the EDGE cause another failure? I heard the pumps on the 99 where weaker / bad and the new ones are better.

Any help would be greatly appreciated... . sleeping on the sofa tonight with angry wife at home...

Did I miss something?. I did not see anything about a check engine light. Do you have access to a fuel pressure guage?. You could pick up a cheap vacuum/pressure guage and a 1/8 pipe thread fitting with a barb connection for the vacuum hose. Remove the front plug on top of the filter housing (post filter) and check pressure. Do same with rear after reinstalling front plug. Bump starter and check pressure.

sorry. . the check engine light came on at the same time the truck stalled... already took the neg leads off the battery, and re-installed. check engine light still comes on, truck won't start, LP primes a long time... does anyone have any suggestions or feedback as to what to tell dealer if I have to take it in?

Still under warranty until 100000 before the EDGE... now, not sure if this was an expensive lesson or if I have an understanding dealer...

Once it's repaired, what is the likely hood of another failure if the EDGE is put back on? I'm a bit aprehensive... the truck ram like a clock until 0900 this Am, only 20 miles after install and 1 hour of drive time.

Thanks again.

If is your vp44 they will not warranty it because the comp was installed. I would look around your area for a good diesel shop if you do not want to tackle this yourself. I personally would not want the dealer to change mine $$$. I hear the replacement pumps are built better than the original that came with your truck. In my opinion it is still a crap shoot. Either way if you want more power you need a box or bigger injectors which will also strain the pump to some degree. I do not have any evidence but it seems to help if you run a diesel additive. The pump can be had from Texas (can,t remember the web address) for 850. 00 if that is indeed your problem. You need to find a scanner to check your codes. Maybe a TDR member near you can help. Good luck

BTW the lift pump will run approx 30 seconds after cranking the engine with a no start I believe.

Dave

You probably have something like a 0216 code, or a pump timing error/fault.

What probably happened is a bit extra heat in the VP44 put it a bit loose, and now the pump is half ceased, and the ECM can't fire it off correctly to fire it, or you have a melted solenoid.

Anyway, you can try the dealer,, but this is a risk you were taking when you installed the COMP. Some dealers will completely overlook this, and help you out on their own dime (because they won't be re-imbursed)

You should be able to get a new injection pump installedabout for $1,550.

Thanks again for everyone's help, advice and input. Can anyone recommend were I can purchase a new lift pump and fuel pump from at the most reasoable cost? Additionally, can anyone recommend a trusted repair facility in the Central valley area of CA?

Does it make sense to replace both the lift pump and fuel pump at the same time, then insatall a fuel guage to monitor? What if I reconnect the EDGE with / with out the fuel pump wire afterwards?

Should I send the EDGE back and put in bigger injectors or just lick my wounds, and leave well enough alone?

Thanks... and humble in Manteca

woops

sorry bout that--good luck-i just got an ez -no pump wire -hope i will be ok:rolleyes: the comp must have been :D :D though

it is easier to ask for fogiveness than permission;) :D

Before you trash the VP-44, or give up on it, have you tried at least slightly loosening the injector lines, then cranking the engine to verify whether or not the VP-44 is actually working or not? Be VERY careful when you do this EXTREMELY HIGH PRESSURES can cause serious personal injury!

Of course, you FIRST must be sure the VP-44 is getting any fuel to pump...

What Gary - KJ6Q said, crack 1,3,4, you don't have to open them very far, then crank it over with the pedal to the floor.

If you have someone to help, you can also get them to bump the starter, while you crack the input line to the vp, if you have fuel there then, crack the injector lines.

I suspect a bad vp44, 98. 5's and 99's are known to do this. When you get a new vp. it should have all the updates, and should last with the pump wire connected.

The website is www.cumminsstuff.com about $750 last I heard.

Pleade Ignorance

I agree w/JKuehl78 - If you're still covered by warranty - take off the Edge, try to make everything look as it did before you installed it. If the rest of the area where the wires are is dusty, give a through dusting. If not try this - spritz the wires w/WD-40, get some fresh dust out of a vacuum cleaner and throw it on them. Try not to make it obvious.

Get it to the dealer, claim ignorance - "I was going down the road and all of a sudden it made a funny noise, slowed down and then all the dash lights came up?" Then you can add, "you know come to think of it, for the past few weeks it kind of seemed like the mileage wasn't as good and it didn't seem to have the normal power?"

It's worth a shot . . . they may not check the wire for punctures . . . if you act ignorant about performance . . . they may not look to hard.

Good luck - let us know how you make out / what you end up doing.

I think how hard the dealer looks for the pump wire tap depends on how many VP44's he's had to eat because DC or Bosch denied claims for that reason. Either way, if a dealer warrants it, be a nice guy and give him some salt, pepper & Ketchup to make it taste better. :D

We'll I'll let you all know next week... my after market warranty that I purchased through my credit union expired 856 miles ago... wish I had checked that before I did the COMP...

Now I have an appointment with the dealer on Monday... I just removed the box, harness, velcro, etc...

Spent the afternoon washing and simple greened the engine and cleaned it up real good... the way I try and usually keep it.

Hopefully this will work... and yes I am going to plead ignornace... the sad part is... I was.

The truck the past few months has been sluggish and my milege had been down. I even went back to 265's from 285's thinking the larger tires were throwing it off a bit.

I really wished I had seen the warning signs and had known to check the lift pump preasure before... but I guess I needed to learn the hard way.

Does anyone know anything about a FAS / pusher pump system? I was refered to a perfomance diesel place in my area by EDGE and they feel if I replace the stock lift pump with a pusher pump, I can run the COMP with no problems to the VP44... thats the way the sell the EDGE and install it there.

Any thoughts or feedback? Running out of $$$ fast in Manteca...

Here it goes... If you messed up your truck, take responsibility for your actions. PAY FOR IT YOUR SELF!

I work at a dealer and it is B. S. what you and others are trying to do.

I was also under the impression that the pumps that are replaced under warranty are sent off to either Bosch or back to DC for further inspection. If the stea... dealer misses it, and the place they send it to catches it a month later, they dont pay the dealer, and then the dealer turns to you two months later and says "Pay up sucker".

Then you can try to hold the "Magnum Moss" sign over your head and get the dealer to prove the wire tapping unit killed the pump and not a bad LP (which could have been overworked by the VP44 being forced to move so much extra fuel), and it just snowballs from there.

Easier on your conscious to just accept the fact that you 86'd your warranty as far as any fuel system components are concerned when you hooked up that little innocent looking wire.
