Archived help!!!! 24 valve wont start

1999 turns but wont start--code po216 & po336... replaced crank sensor . . will start & run fine with starting fluid. dodge dealer thinks tone wheel is bad but cant say for sure it will fix. no damage to crank sensor was seen. truck has 190000 miles. seemed to start about the time 1 battery got weak... . new member needs help!!!!!!!!!!!!!! anyone had a similar problem??????????

p216 is generally the death code for the vp-44 injection pump. Code reads (injection pump timing failure).

Pull the crank sensor, and using a small srewdriver, you can try to wiggle the tone wheel on the crank through the CPS hole. You will have to rotate the engine 180* as it is a 2 piece tone wheel. If you can get help, pull the starter and try to either wedge your head up from the bottom so you can actually look in the hole, or use a mirror and have someone roll the engine over by hand and watch the wheel.

Any damage to the face of the CPS is a dead giveaway that the tone wheel is bad.

P0216 is also linked to low fuel pressure. I have seen a few trucks throw the P0216, and be just fine after a LP replacement/upgrade. Rare, but it does happen.
