OK Guys, long story-short version.....

I developed a knock while hauling a load of cows/calves. All guages, oil-temp-egr-boost were fine. A check revealed oil full, and nothing leaking. Re-start and the knock went away***.

Fast forward a month. Empty truck highway speed 75+mph, and suddenly knock is back but worse. Again all guages show ok, but the knock is ugly... . Limp it to the shop, and today they pulled the head.

#5 and #6 appear to both have been hot and both cylinders are scored. Don't know if they should be re-sleeved or honed ( any info let me know), I'll update you when I get the pistons out.

Any ideas on how I can prevent this from happening again? I want to install 370s and at least a 3000rpm GSK while I got it down, but before that I need to remedy the heat problem to 5 &6. .

My turbo is a stock HX35, but I have a 16cm housing from TST. I didn't think my mods would need a turbo upgrade, but I guess I need more cool intake air to 5 & 6. Anybody have any other ideas, please let me know asap... I gotta start ordering parts. . This one's gonna hurt a bit...

What's the PN on the best headgasket to use?

TIA and sorry about the long post,

Jay

When I disassembled my motor a few weeks ago I found the #6 piston cooling nozzle in the oil pan.

Not sure why it broke off, but no cool oil on the bottom side of that piston coupled with high EGT's caused some serious damage to that piston.

Check yours.

Nowell,

I'll be in Lodi most of the morning, and then have to head to Stockton about 1pm. My trucks in Stockton, head off, front end tore apart. Call me on my mobile when you get to town,

209-603-9941, hopefully we can hook up.

This happened to a friends new 24v. He went to Jiffy-Lube, and they put on a cheap oil filter (Fram) . The filter media broke up, & plugged the cooling nozzels , & it fried & siezed #1. Got a new engine underr warranty. Stick with Fleetguard.

Hangin' Out At Bell Turbo

What a coincidence meeting you at Bell Turbo today! You sure got the crash course from Pius as many folks do :)

From what I gathered you don't feel you were running loaded with egt's over 1300. When quizing the guys at Cummins West the subject of the coolant system was the primary concern. Obviousely you should have seen high temps on the engine temp gauge in that scenario. The guys mentioned stuff like a plugged up rad. A block with junk in the coolant passages. Low coolant level. When looking at the head gasket for the dozen valve engine I have to wonder how the head is supposed to stay at optimal operating temp with those 1/16" coolant passages.

What engine oil are you using Jay?

Keep us informed of your findings.

Bell Turbo beats the Donut Shop hands down !!!!! Although the donuts are a little cheaper than one of Pius' masterpieces. Man he does good work! Great seeing you there, probably helped that I was wearing a name tag huh?

I don't have the block out yet, so the cause is not known. . I'll keep you updated, but I saw no coolant temps higher than 190 degrees, and the egt's were not above 1200 during any part of the trip.

I'm using Delo 400, and have since I got the truck, June of 98 with about 37k on it. It's now at 110k. I have to admit, before joining TDR I did use some of the mentioned bad oil filters... Maybe I was still using pieces of them and didn't know it?
