( Help need info )'96 5 Speed trany Knocking Loud ???????

:{ 1996 DODGE RAM 2500 4X4 CUMMINS DIESEL OF COURSE, NEW CLUTCH AND STUFF 2000 MILES AGO. TRUCK HAS 214,000 MILES ON IT. I'VE ONLY OWNED THE TRUCK FOR 2 MONTHS. runs like new...



LAST NIGHT I WAS COMING OFF THE OFF RAMP ON THE HIGHWAY, DOWNSHIFTED FROM 5TH TO 4TH GEAR, THEN INTO 3RD TAPPED THE GAS A LITTLE BIT AND BEING THE THE RPMS WERE LOW IT MADE THE TRUCK JERK A LITTLE BIT, AS SOON AS IT JERKED I NOTICED A LOUD KNOCKING SOUND. . COASTED TO A STOP... STARTED OFF IN FIRST AND still HAD THE LOUD KNOCKING SOUND, KNOCKS THROUGH ALL THE GEARS ACCEPT IN 4TH. BUT YOU CAN STILL HEAR SOME THING NOT RIGHT IN 4TH. TRUCK STILL GOES IN AND OUT OF EVERY GEAR FINE STILL DRIVES FINE SHIFTS FINE,CLUTCH FEELS FINE... . JUST HAS A LOUD ASS KNOCK!!!!!!!!!!!.

MIND YOU THIS IS A VERY LOUD KNOCK, LIKE A HAMMER HITTING METAL.

BUT WHEN THE CLUTCH IS PUSHED IN IT MAKES NO KNOCKING SOUND.

WITH THE TRUCK OUT OF GEAR CLUTCH NOT PUSHED IN IT MAKES A LOUD KNOCKING SOUND. THE FASTER YOU REV IT THE FASTER IT KNOCKES.

BUT WITH THE CLUTCH PUSHED IN NO KNOCKS WHILE REVING.

P,S THIS IS MY WORK TRUCK ... IT PULLS A 30 FOOT BOX TRAILER EVERY DAY . . FULLY PACKED WITH CONCRETE TOOLS... ...



ENTERPRISE ENGINE AINT OPEN ON SATERDAY,, SO I CANT SEE THEM TILL MONDAY... ... ... AND WE GOT LOTS OF CONCRETE TO GET ON THE GROUND

MONDAY... . LIKE BRIAN MITCHELL ALWAYS TELLS ME IF IT WASNT FOR BAD LUCK I WOULDN'T HAVE ANY LUCK AT ALL

Sounds like you took a tooth off the input shaft or the cluster gear. Don't drive it until you find out for sure what is wrong. Those broken teeth running around in there will just make a bigger mess.

I think DC or somebody ought to give everybody with a 5 spd a refund. I could understand if only trucks with big HP/TQ were trashing these gearboxes - you are your own warranty station - but stock trucks??? Like mine, for instance. Stock power. Towed twice in eight years - well under weight limit. All periodic maintenance done by the book.



Does a week go by without somebody new posting that they have a problem with these things? And the real insult is that, except for the stupid cheez-whiz little nut fix they made available, DC refuses to acknowledge that the problem exists. So that leaves all who have had their NV4500s go south one way or another with the prospect of spending significant $$$ to put something right that was never right in the first place.



Anybody out there ever think of taking these pinheads to small claims court about this? Depending on your local laws the cost of a 5 spd is probably under the small claims limit.



If these were aircraft the FAA would have grounded the fleet years ago.

so you think i need a new trany /??????????????
 
well i took off the pto cover off ,and it is not good,,,,,,,,,counter shaft is done the teeth are half there..... input shaft has a lot of wear... ... . this is going to $$$$$$ cost i can feel it... . in the morning i will call doug at enterprise to see what he thinks i shoud do to fix it.....



what do you guys think i should do??????????????????????????

fix this one buy a rebilt one or nv5600 ( what do nv5600 cost)

inthe 5600 the high gear in not held on by some squirly little nut in an extension housing check out www.quad4x4.com for new ones i think you can find them cheaper but dan's kit comes with every thing you need
