Happy Birthday KBennett

Ok, here's the deal.

Last night I get home from work... after a long crappy day. My roommates had gotten the mail. They had left me a note with a couple of my mortguage paperwork that had been mailed to me. It was out of the envelope. This wasn't just one letter, it was 2. Both envelopes were gone. I also have a Check in the mail from a great guy, who is putting a stop payment on it, and mailing me another.

I talked to my roommates. They had sent out a couple of X-mas cards and they were never recieved.

At this point I have what could be a big problem. I'm beginning to wonder if someone is digging through my mail. I also have a mailman/woman who doesn't close the mailbox door. I don't know if these things fell out, got wet and somehow opened... etc.

What should I do? A friend of mine said to file a police report. Another said I should go to my bank, and my mortguage company and get my account numbers changed.

Thanks for the feedback!

Obviously, at a minimum, i would report it to the post office. I would also notify my bank and the mortage company to at least keep an eye on the acounts for any unusual transactions. Unfortunately, this is pretty common around here. The local post office does not recomend that we send mail out of our own boxes. We have to drive 5 miles to the nearest drop box :-{} For mail that you recieve, you may want to look into a good quality heavy duty locking mail box. Although nothing will stop them from getting what they want, if yours is a lot heavier duty than the neighbors, chances are they will move to the next box and leave yours alone.

I talked to my Mortguage company. They are understanding. Although, they still want their money ASAP! Understandable, but man this is going to mess up my finances for a while!

If I have a locking mailbox, how does the post office deliver? Make a slot big enough for the TDR mag, and figure everything else will fit?

Thanx for the advise, I'll be talking to my bank tomorrow!

Messing with the US Mail is a Federal offense. The post office takes it very seriously. Report it without delay.

Wow I knew it was a serious offense, but I didn't think they took it very seriously. I'll definatly do that tomorrow!

I would also notify the credit reporting agencies about what's going on. If somebody gets enough info about you, opening new accounts under your name can be easy. Notifying Experian, Transunion, and Equifax flags your account and requires added security measures to open accounts, loans, etc. Protecting your good credit is a whole lot easier than repairing it.

JoshPeters,

Put a fraud alert on your credit. Call one of the credit agencies and put in a fraud alert. They will notify the other 2 and put the alert on those. If you do this, your junk mail will decrease drastically. I did that last year and it eliminated all junk mail, low interest credit card crap and a whole host of other things. If someone tries to establish credit on your ID the credit agencies will notify you. Hope this helps.
