finally got the lift pump off yesterday, found what looks like cast iron in prescreen. anyone have any ideas where this could have came from. i say cast iron beacuse of the dark color and it sticks to a magnet. should i drain the tank(full ofcourse) or will the fuel filter take care of it?

The first time I changed my screen I posted the same question. Unless you have a gob of metal in there it is normal.

thanks GAmes, thats a relief!and by the way(always forgetting things thes days)the plunger rod was stuck on the lift pump,so i got a new one from my local private owened parts house,(roger little in chapel hill tn)coast $145. xx,its a carter,is that a good pump?will get new screen and gaskets in a couple of days in nashville, and see how it goes from there.

I didn't pay any attention to who built the one I bought. Got it from a Case tractor place for less than what the Cummins shop wanted. If you haven't installed it yet I recommend replacing the bolts with studs, way easier to reassemble. I believe the ones I put on were 55 mm long. Don't forget the lock-tite. Oh, also replace that rubber elbow hose, I think it is a dealer only item, about $7.

I installed a Delphi pump. I don't know if I ever had metal in my preheater because I took it off. Cut the preheater off but left the base for the spacer. Those preheaters are junk anyways. JMO

yesterday, finally got lift pump on,got truck started,(finally)drove truck 10 miles ran fine, started fine this morning, moved it 30 ft,died, wouldn't start. did the pump on lift punp, finally started, moved it back, died again. didnt try it anymore. is there an air leak or is lift pump going south?

I might have missed it... but have you had starting/running problems before?

Have you changed your fuel filter?

What condition are your fuel lines in?

willys, yes it quit running when this problem started, about two weeks before. in the past have bouth fuel lines replaced, and the returne replaced about six months ago. the rod that is driven by the cam,was locked up on the lift pump i removed.

make sure your not sucking air at the fuel heater connection, or cracks in 90 elbow going to your lift pump... .....

Have you checked the mounts for the metal lines? I've read they can crack if you get to bending them too hard when installing rubber lines. How about the lines coming out of the tank, or in the tank?

I'm gonna take a wild guess here, but has anyone ever seen the spring in the overflow valve break? I'm wondering how it would run under that kind of situation... If the fuel pressure is so low that it idles low or rough, so it won't stay running?

Good luck finding your problem.

got it going yesterday!it was the rubber feed line. did the jug of fuel and hose to lift pump. as i was doing this all was well for acouple of minutes, then fuel began to pour out of the preheater where i removed the hose to put line to fuel jug. killed engine, fuel kept running out, finally removed the fuel cap on tank and it stopped. what a mess that was on the car port. lesson learned. the return line was replaced about six months ago for the secound time, feed line looked good(so much for looks)bouth were stainless braded line, they lasted almost 200,000 miles. the hose i replaced it with is a clear hose with wire in it,had it laying around to replace fuel lines on the harley. will order the marine diesel hose and replace both lines soon. thanks everyone for the help!learned some more about the old 94. she has been a good one, towed heavy racing trailor for about ten years. off today to go nitro harley dirt drag racing in ga. thanks again everyone!
