Archived *HELP* big fuel leak

96 ex cab, gushing fuel just above the starter almost a mist type of spray but heavy enough to soak starter and block. What usually breaks in this area I can't actually see where the leak is. I had the tank out to replace the fuel Mod. a month ago. Do the lines rust out as well. If I need to replace the lines does the tank have to drop again. .

Rubber fuel lines are in that area.

They are a common problem.

Fun to get to also.

You will need about 18" of 5/16" and 3/8" hose.

I recommend getting some from a marine place.

I had the same things. . There's a fitting under the fuel filter that was loose on my 24V. That was the same area of the problem I had.

I've got the prime lock fuel filter re-locater so I know that the filter is not the problem. Leaning tward the rubber lines if someone has had this problem. does dropping the starter allow room to get in there ?

Probably the return line, as the suction line doesnt have any pressure on it. Follow the return back from the injection pump, its on the passenger front side of the inj pump with a banjo fitting. It goes straight back from the pump, and takes a dive after the end of the intake manifold. It goes to rubber at that point. Very hard to get to. I cut mine off 4" after the inj pump and changed to a flare-->barb connection. Then I ran a new piece of Trident Marine hose back to the return line under the drivers floor, and eliminated two pieces of rubber hose. Theres one piece of rubber from the engine to the cowling, then another SS rubber hose under the drivers floor. I recommend disconnecting it, then waiting an hour or two so you dont get a diesel bath. .

I got 15' of 3/8" ID (supply) and 15' of 5/16" ID (return) of the A1 #365 hose.

Thanks for the help guys, and thanks to TDR.

Right about being hard to get to, a 6" longer arm would help alot. Anyone else doing this repair just be patient and take your time you'll get em. It was the return line, previous owner had replaced it already but did not use diesel rated hose. The hose had practicly melted away and was very soft. I bought the diesel rated hose from Napa that had the same rating I read from the thread "replacing rubber fuel lines". Ineed to replace the steering shaft and will do the other lines at that time.



The dealer wanted a $65. 00 diagnoses and said most likely would need all new fuel lines. Can even begin to imagine what the total bill would be. Replacement line and 2 clamps was $3. 62 and an hour or so of my time... . cool huh
