Help! Blew a Oil Sending unit

URGENT! I just blew the Oil Sending Unit out of the side of my Cummins!



I drove it for 3 mile before I knew what had happened. Engine was cold upon start up. My truck looks like the Exxon Valdez and with nothing showing on the Dipstick!



My concern is Main Bearings at the moment. DO we have Plain Bearings or Ball Bearings on the Crank?

I hope I didn't fry the Gurl!

Well if you ran it till it seezed, you are in deep voodoo. If you stopped it while it was still running, fill the crankcase and plug the sender and fire it up. Forget that you had the problem. Oh, you probably ought to clean it up.



More details please.



Babbit bearings. The Cummins has plenty of balls but none on the crank.

I did exactly what you said. Plugged the Oil Sending Unit Hole with a Threaded Plug and filled the engine with 8 quarts of oil (out of 12+) and Primed her using the Fuel Cut Off.



The Cummins fired right up and seems normal..... However, The Holset HX35 is SMOKED! That's what I felt when the engine changed in performance.



I guess a Turbo is cheap in this situation... .

On a side note, I think the thing with the turbo is a real eye opener though... .



On normal startup, a turbo needs oil feed within about 5 seconds or damage results/starts to result..... repeatedly doing this will hasten the failure of the turbo and, when we push these old girls hard like most of us do, the turbo takes a beating to begin with... .

You're prayers were felt all the way to Tennessee tonight! The truck is back in the parking lot here at work after it's 3 mile / 9 quart journey! I'm going to slap the old H1c Turbo back on her until I can find another HX35.



It's great to be back Bob... . I feel somewhat lucky tonight!



Anyone have a nice HX35 they're willing to part with? Maybe, I'll ask the 2nd Gen Guys!

In that regard I have wondered if the first gens fire up 'too' quick. The second gens take a bit more stirring before they come alive. However, my Old Faithful with half a million miles has shown that in normal operation the oil gets to the turbo soon enough. And I always give it a few seconds before I put it in gear. I don't like the fact that you have to hold the clutch in on start up (with no oil pressure) either but I realize that without that safety someone would get in trouble since the first gens are instantly running when you bump the starter.



Like they said, glad you got by with only the turbo. It sure could have been worse.
