I want to say first that you guys are awesome and are the foundation that supports all diesel rammers. I bow to you. My problem: A friend of mine is blowing black smoke from his 93 2wd 3500 and it started suddenly and with out provocation. No, he didn't tamper with the pump and has maintained his rig adequately. He has been told various stories such as... "your injection pump is going out", and. . "You need new injectors"... I know some of you guys have been through this before, so... Here's what I have done.

First, I checked the intercooler connections.
then listened for air leaks under the hood(difficult, at best. )
I took a look at the fuel delivery shaft inside the pump and found no damage and a witness mark on the leanest setting. So, the pump wasn't 'tweeked'. He states that it blows heavy black smoke when he applies go pedal, not even mashed to the floor, but about half throttle and above. No noticable drop in performance either. I haven't found any obvious problems. Have any clues?
Any help would be appriciated, thanks.
Steve.

Number of miles issue: injector problems...

Everything else pretty much boils down to airflow being insufficient. Either a baffle just plugged up his muffler or something got into his air intake (and plugged it)... Or, the turbo's headed south.

Not much else can do this...

Thanks for the advice... He has 110k miles on it and its not hammered. I checked his filter too with no obvious abnormalities (wow, big word). I'll dive into the air supply down to the turbo when I get back from the coast in a few days. I was thinking maybe a boost prob??? I'm guessing at this point. Thanks for the help.

A 0-20 psi pressure gage with a long hose connected to the intake manifold will tell if enough air is getting to the engine. If the truck is stock he should get 13-15 psi at max power.

I've seen a "Similar" problem...

On a friends truck we found that the wastegate was frozen up solid from rust deposits.

frozen in the "Bypass" position. .

Hope this helps.
