Recently the check engine light has come on but my scanner shows no codes. When the CE light comes on sometimes the engine will sputter a few times then run fine. Sometimes when the CE light comes on the tach will drop to 0 while the engine keeps running. Yesterday while driving the CE light came on and after a couple of miles the engine quit however I was able to restart the engine immediately while at road speed.
The truck is a 1999 and I have had it since 2006. It had 138k miles when I got it and now has 238k miles. Both of the computers have been replaced, also fuel injector and lift pump was replaced (by FASS) over the years. Don't have any idea as to why this is happening, perhaps fuel injector or computer again?
Any help would be appreciated! Can't afford to be without this truck!

What scanner do you have? Have you read codes off this truck with it in the past? I only ask cause I've had different scanners over the years an some of them never did work on the 98.5-02 trucks, I'm not sure why exactly. Anyway my point is if you have a CEL I feel like there should be a code!

I think the crank position switch is located behind the starter, it reads a tone wheel mounted on the crank shaft (two piece) which has been known to come loose. bg

I ordered a crank position sensor at my friendly NAPA store and will be installing it later today. Hopefully it will fix it, either way thanks to all for the help.

Definitely sounds like a CPS based on your description, but I would attempt to verify with another scanner. ECM should be communicating.

Also, they can be a booger to remove. Be careful not to break the entire connector end off trying to remove it.

I would make sure to check the tone ring with a screwdriver to make sure it is TIGHT. Check one side then roll it over 1/2 a turn and check the other side, my tone ring came loose, got all ground up and took my entire engine out in one minute at 70 mpg.
