Does anybody know of a good aftermarket, high output alternator that is compatible with the 3rd gens, without many modifications? Also, what is the highest output alternator I can get without having to fear about overcharging the batteries and causing damage to my electrical system?

Here is what I am after. I am currently installing an aftermarket stereo system in my truck and my amps are drawing some pretty large current. I am running two amps, one for my door speakers that is fused off at 60 amps and my sub amp which is fused off at 150 amps. Of course when the stereo cranked up, the light dim. . etc, So I installed a set of 3 1 farad caps which helped, but is not the solution for this type of load. So before I damage anything, I need to purchase an alternator that can handle my amps. Any ideas on brand or size?

Thanks

Kev

You should have at least 130 amp alternator now i don't know how much bigger you could go. I guess you wired all your amps to the battery and not the fuse box.

I was thinking the same thing.

You might call these folks:

Also, maybe a dual output, run one output just for the stereo. I did this on a competition rig, but it was a WHOLE LOT bigger than what you are talking about here. Two D4 batteries in back, 12 15" subs in a S10 Blazer.

Hey Kevin;

I think I read on here a while back (within the last 2 months)about Neville alternators. There was another brand as well but cant remember the name. I do not remember if it was a direct replacement or not. Try looking at the link below for more info on them dont know if it will help you or not.

dont know of any yet, but how many watts are the amps you are using?

I have a 75x4 and plus a 1600 x 1, so I am pushing some pretty good wattage.

I did wire the amps directly to the batteries, though I know that with this type of current, the batteries won't live the longest of life.

Robbie, Barry, thanks for the info on them brands, I am definately going to research them.

This would actually be for non commercial use, but I would definately be interested in this product. Can it be sold to the general public? Also, what kind of special wiring would you be referring too?

Thanks

You're worried about your electrical system? Just out of curiosity, with a system like you're running, what are you going to use for hearing when you are older? I don't mean to sound like an old fart, but that's a lot of decibels you can pump through there.

ok back to basic physics watt=amps X volts so ifiyour pushing 1900 watts at 14 volts you need about 136 amps. pluss all the lights and so on. but with 2 batteries and there reserve and you caps you should be able to run those amps + all day but a bigger alt is always nice.

No worries, my sound system is about Sound Quality and not loudness. I have already had my days of loud stereo systems... now it all about clearity. :D :D

Thanks everyone for the pointers... I'm out looking at different types right now.
