Just got home. Was towing 8k LBS today, found it VERY sluggish and low on power and then the CEL came on, as I was just around the corner from the dealer, had them scan it. Says code came up as "No Boost pressure detected" and they said would likely have to clean out the turbo and EGR and maybe replace it!:mad: And as the truck had its warranty pulled by Chrysler when we had to import it into Canada from the USA, that turbo cost would have to come out of our pocket! And the truck only has 33k miles on it and I would say 30K of those are all highway!

So, guess I should ask. What are my options here. I am so lost at the moment I cant even say or think strait. .

Thanks.

Robert

P. S. If it helps, additional info: Did a 800 mile drive last weekend, and thought it odd. Was 4 mpg lower than usual and dpf seemed to regen many times. After 500 miles it seemed to then be normal again. Also yesterday the truck was acting wierd. Almost felt like it wanted to stall.

Is your dealer familiar with and skilled in the cleaning procedure? I've never seen a turbo disassembled but I've read comments by Bob4x4, Mike Mullenax, and/or sag2 who are each Dodge dealer Cummins techs discussing the details of how the turbo has to be cleaned. The procedure is detailed and apparently critical. If one of our resident techs don't see and reply to your post I would recommend pm'ing all three of them for advice before you let the dealer open it up. Cleaning it precisely right might prevent replacement.

Second, since you will be spending your own money I would suggest you do some price shopping if the turbo has to be replaced. TDR members use several different online discounters for OEM parts. The one I use is a woman named "K" at MOPAR4LESS. I would ask for recommendations of Dodge dealers and compare prices. Also check with the Cummins distributors. I don't know how difficult it is for you Canadians to get US made parts into Canada. My guess is most of you know ways to avoid some of the tax issues but I don't know how those things work.

Looking on the bright side, you probably saved a ton of money by buying the truck in the US market and importing it. Even if you have to buy a turbo you're probably still money ahead.

Since you are in Canada and not subject to USA emission rules. I also believe you stated that the warranty was voided by importing the truck from the US to Canada. With that in mind I would look at doing the DPF/EGR delete and adding a "Smarty S67" using the ME version of the software.

You do not need to run any thing extreme, but this will prevent CEL's and the engine from going into limp mode. I also believe that you maybe able to increase your fuel mileage by two to four MPG in the city and on the highway.

I have seen 6. 7L turbos on ebay for between $200-$500 US. Maybe its worth deleting everything and getting a used turbo. Then you can experiment(possibly clean) your old one and hold onto it as a spare.

New to this, just a suggestion.

I would be afraid to buy a used eBay ISB6. 7 turbo. It may be one removed by a dealer under warranty when it sooted up and was binding and found its way out the back door of the shop and onto eBay.

Thanks for all the responses!Oo.

Yes, they have done many.

Yes, I have ways of getting US parts! :D Either way if a replacement is needed, I will not get it through a Canadian dealer. Our prices our 40% more than y'alls. :(

And yes, we did save money by getting in down south, but either way this still hurts for a truck that only has 30K on it. Truth be told a $5000 bill (what the dealer quoted out the door) is way more than I have at the moment. :(

Jim, I would like to hear more about this. Do you know anything else? Where do I et the delete parts from and what happens to all those tube lines that all feed into the DPF area? Do they just hang there or do they need to be removed?

Welcome to the TDR and thanks for thinking of my issue! I will check Ebay but would have to agree with Harvey on this one. Unless confirmed new, I would be a little concerned it would be a dead one. :(

Several TDR members are using off-road delete kits and have posted about their results. I think the sensor harnesses are terminated appropriately with the kits. They report using a Smarty magic black box to reset the codes the ECM generates when it doesn't find the emissions junk.

I would start a new thread to post a question about sourcing for the delete kits to get the best info from recent and current users.

There are several flavors of 6. 7 turbos out there and bunches of them laying on shelves at dealers i had my turbo replaced and orginally the dealer told me they kept the first gen replacements, then cummins/dodge made them start returning the cores. saw about 4 of them sitting under a bench.

i have seen them for 50 100 bucks as cores

get mullinax or bobx 4x4 to throw you some part numbers of the newer revised turbos that had the larger electric solonoid motors or the updated motors PN# ?

The newest revised casting has the allen headed cleaning port bolt preinstalled and a larger or high capacity solonoid motor i believe, but a casting is still a casting and turbos are rebuilt all the time bearings seals rotors etc, realitivily simple part as long as the clearances are correct.

short of spending 2 grand for a oem part these parts a very common due to failures call a couple of turbo shops and start asking questions .

Ebay has lots of them just be mindful of the part numbers

would have to look at gutting all the egr crap ,dpf and a turbo back 4 " exhaust and fool the computer and also will fix the fuel dilution in oil problem at the same time your engine will happier the other cummins forum has a lot of info to read also on this issue. the late model 5. 9 had none of these issues

get the techs to throw you some of their thoughts on all this .

Harvey you always seem to hit the nail on the head with this as this question pops up a lot

new thread with this topic needs to reviewed again.

AS flash and all is well for now

Unfortunately, some of sounds familiar to me. I had my truck in the shop for 2 weeks. They replaced everything from the exhaust ports back in the exhaust (including EGR). This was over $10k in parts and labor. I was fortunate that I had the warranty, otherwise the dealer would have inherited the truck!

Good luck with the repairs! It does not sound as bad as mine was, don't let it get that bad.

Here is the info from MADS ELECTRONICS page for the egr delete.

MADS Electronics - Smarty - CaTCHER - DisclaimerS-06A

I also completetly deleted my egr cooler. Take all the garb off and use the gaskets as templates to build the plates. These need to be thicker than the egr delete plates because the are on the exhuast side of the engine.

i scored a he351vgt for $120 delivered off ebay to play with and i don't see anything that could not be cleaned on it from my taking it apart and putting it back together, i had planned on putting it on my 12v but shifted gears and am likely going to install it on one of my hotrod bmws, if it was me id pull the center section off the exhaust housing leaving it on the truck and clean him up, if you mark the position of the vg rack when you pull the motor housing off it should be ok but i am not positive, it has a scraper ring on the sliding housing to keep it clear and i blew a ton of crap out of the housing from under the sliding part with compressed air, everything was easy enough to move before i cleaned it and may of gotten a little easier after the session with the air gun

Bob,

1 - Are you aware of a Class Action Lawsuit against the Canadian Manufacturers for denying warranty? If not look it up on the web and sign up!

2 - Ditto on my Texas Truck... No Warranty in Canada or the States... Criminal in my mind espacially after the billions of tax dollars dumped into these organizations.

3 - Ditch the DPF/Cat/EGR and get a SmartyS67

4 - If you have the 6 speed - the dual mass clutch is a piece of crap... I had one go and didn't get to the dealer in time to go after market. When I come back I am switching to an G56-OFEK.

Still smoking at this warranty BS - they use free trade to their advantage and expect us to kiss their *** and pay 20K more up here...

Harrison

Thanks for the thoughts!

1 - No I was not. Will look into it. :)

2 - Sorry you weere nailed by it too. :(

4 - Auto. No clutch issues. :D
