ok, stupid question but how many quarts of oil does a 2001. 5 truck hold?

I have 4 - 1 gallon containers ready and waiting. . , i think it is 3 gallons or 12 quarts...

someone please confirm... in the middle of the oil change now :(

The filter holds 1 quart of the 11 quarts needed. Do you want your engine to run 'dry' while the filter is filling after your first start? You probably won't hurt anything, but that is the normal method when using larger filters.

Theres some debate on prefilling. If you do make sure you do not get any of the foil seal into the filter... The hole in the center of the filter is on the clean side... Any debris in there could plug a piston cooling nozzle . . Very very bad.

Caterpillar no longer recommends prefilling the filter on their engines. They say the risk of particle contamination on the clean side of the filter outweighs any benefit of faster initial filter fill.

pre filling the filter

Bill, I wonder if Cat recommendations are based on fleet maintenance procedures and practice. You would only need a small percentage of inattentive mech's to destroy a lot of valuable equipment. So... tell "everyone" not to pre-fill the filter and the problem is eliminated.

The situation here is different... . a bunch of guys and gals who are totally obsessed with their "baby" and want to give it the best care possible. In this situation I think pre filling the filter (carefully) might be recommended. Yes? No?

I'm sure Cat is just covering their butt. But I've often wondered how filtered oil is right out of the jug . I fill mine partially most of time, more like half a quart, no messing around with slop installing a totally filled one and if in a hurry don't prefill at all. Over 200k and it keeps on running.

I've also noticed that when left to drain overnight on an oil change that the filter is only half full. I assume that this means the filter needs to fill the rest of the way after every morning start.

oil filter filling

I have never pre filled an oil filter. I also do the service on a N-14 cummins 460 it has one big spin on. After putting in 11gals oil in the N-14 I just fire her up, check for leaks and recheck the oil. I did this with my first truck which had one million four hundred thousand miles on it. Already have 250,000 on new one. No problems :D

Since I run Delo 400 in all my rides (Dodge, Jeep and Jag), I buy the stuff by the case. When the old oil stops draining, I like to pour in about 1/2 qt of new oil with the drain plug still removed. Washes the last little bit of oil out which makes me feel much better. Not doing so would be like not rinsing after brushing your teeth :D

i have probably performed over 300 oil changes in my life. most were many years ago working on a fleet of 36 school buses other school equipment. from gravely tractors to v16 detroit diesels on a kohring 1066 back hoe, i have always filled the filters to maximum before installing. we tested once, not filling the filter on an old 345 international gas engine, and observed about a 5 second additional delay before we got oil pressure. i dont know about you but do you want YOUR engine to run 5 seconds longer without oil pressure??? not me!!. i changed oil yesterday on an international diesel farm tractor with dual filters. even though the filters mount virtually upside down, i still filled them about 30 minutes early to allow the oil to soak into the element. they have a plastic tube down the center to keep oil from running out. when i turned them over while over the filter base, i did not have more than 5 or 6 drops of oil run off before the filters were tight.

again, you can change filters without oil in them, but based on the law of averages... the engine lasts longer when it has oil pressure as quickly as possible.

imho

I guess it all comes down to personal preference. Like I said never done it, oil presure always comes right up to normal operating pressure. Send in oil samples regularly they come back a-ok. 1,400,000 miles on first big rig and only rolled in a new set of bearings at 700,000 miles. My mechanic said they looked good enough to put back in but went with a new set. :D :D

All though it takes much longer, its a good job for my son, I fill the filter through the small holes, this assures that my filter is pre-filled with filtered oil
