I was in the middle of taking my pump top off when my girlfriend came over, not wanting to hear her ***** I started hurrying, got the pump top off and while unhooking the governor spring the pin, washer and spring went flying. I found the washer and pin in the drain pan I had under the truck but no spring of course. I drained most of the fuel out of the top of the pump and looked in there, fished w/ a small magnet, no spring. Looked all under the truck and on the driveway, finally gave up for the night. I'm assuming since I found the washer on top of the drain pan and the pin inside it(one of those oil change pans w/ 2 small holes) that the spring went flying somewhere besides the pump, since the washer is on the outside, is my logic flawed? Also, looking through my Bosch gasket kit they didn't include that small spring, can I use any spring or is that one special? It's just there to keep tension on the governor spring, right? Does anyone have one of these laying around they'd like to sell me or whatever? If the spring fell in the pump that would probably spell the death of my pump, right? How much more time am I looking at to take the pump off the motor? Thanks-Nick

The Bosch part numbers for the 3 parts involved are:

Bosch part list

# 1 463 123 363- this is the "pin"

# 1 464 610 302- this is the little spring

# 1 460 500 307- this is the "top hat" or the little cup washer

You shouldn't have any trouble getting those parts thru any Bosch/injection shop.

If your asked about what pump this is for the following is a referrance info for the VE pump... .

0 460 426 114 shown as " distributor type fuel injection pump - VE6/12f1250R320

Hope that helps you out... . :D:D

Further proof that women should not be allowed in the garage. I just hope that Diesel Darlin or my wife does not read this. . :{ :-laf :-laf

In my experiance working on this sorta stuff every day, you need to find ALL the parts, or at least prove to yourself that the part is still not in the pump. Its easier this way then to have it bite you in the but later, and more expensive to fix.

I found what worked the best for me was to turn the door knob assy around so I could lock the garage door from myside instead of the house side.

Whatever you do, please know that the old spring is not still left in the pump somewhere. I'd hate to hear of a pump failure due to that spring getting chewed up and cramming itself in places where it is not intended to be! I hope you can find it. I'm pullin' for ya! Here's an exploded view of what's in the pump...

This seems to be a common occurence lately. I know I've read a couple others guys losing this spring recently on DTR:rolleyes::laugh:. I have to thank Greenleaf for his VE 101 lesson at Smoke Over Peru Cookout #2 last fall. I sure made sure I was holding the top hat and spring when I pulled the pump top apart:D. Another reason you guys shouldn't miss the SOP Cookout #3 this fall:cool:.

GTobey, I'd like to have that VE exploded pic emailed to me unreduced. I'm sending you a PM with email addy, if you don't mind.

I called Scheid Diesel today in Terra Haute, same guys I bought my gasket kit and throttle shaft bushing from. They said it might run away on me if the spring is in the governor somewhere, $350 to $400 to tear the pump apart and flow it, and put it back together, but I know if the pump's off might as well either buy new injectors or get mine checked out at the same time. I couldn't be more mad at myself now, I knew there was a spring there and all I had to do was wait for a second set of hands to unhook the spring, but...

If this truck was a 5 sp I wouldn't hesitate to have the pump turned up a bit and get some POD's and a turbo, but all I'll do is blow up the trans if I do that. The truck only has 80K on it but is a rust bucket, I don't know if I should just sell it now instead of throwing money at it. I'm off work tomorrow, I hope I can find that spring!! Anyone want to sell me their 5 speed? :D

Get yourself a mechanic's magnet and run it around inside the pump, if it is in there you will find it. Look inside with a strong light and if you don't see it put it back together and save yourself the money. I had the same thing happen while doing a friends and found the spring on the frame by the engine and the top hat way back by the transfer case on top of the cross member.

The spring is on its way. I couldn't find it anywhere today, but I emptied all the fuel out of the pump and looked, fished w/ a magnet and didn't find anything. I'm going to put a new spring in along w/ my 3200 governor spring and call it a day.
