have 2750 miles on it and the motor started to make this clicking noise almost like it is the valves clicking anyone else have this problem??? Its louder than that annoying transmission clatter. Used to be the quietest truck except when at idle and clutch wasnt pushed down there was that noise that went away by pushing the clutch pedal down but all the sudden there is this very distinct clicking noise. Help me out please. .

I have that same noise from time-to-time, not the clutch noise - that was there for a while and then faded away.

This light "knocking" or "ticking" sounds like it is at crank revolution. Not always there. If I can catch it I'll put the stethoscope on and see where the source is.

Maybe Carlton Bale could shed some light on this?

Mine has done the same thing from time to time since the first couple of weeks. I chalk it up to an engine that is quiet now, so you hear things you would never have been able to on the old engine. I have 9,000 miles now. My theory is, if it has oil pressure, drive it.

My '99 2nd gen does it too...

My '99 2nd gen does this too. If you figure it out, let me know... sounds almost like a small exhaust leak. A ticking sound... Just does it sometimes and I cannot figure out any pattern.

If it's the same thing I had, you can feel it through your right foot and it's more distinct when the eng is cold. Now that I have 6k, it's very smooth and there's no hint of that knock. Let her break in awhile, things just keep getting better with a Cummins. :D

Well this morning I got in it and no noise drove it to my shop and about 20 minutes later it was making the noise. Who puts the oil in Dodge or Cummins. Wondering if maybe wrong oil got put in and it is worn out. Has good oil pressure and only here it at an idle.

Ticking or clicking

Mine does it to! Sounds like an exhaust leak or a lifter, but it doesn't appear to be either. I wounder if its the high pressure common rail injection. Mine seams to be worse when the engine is cold. When everything get good and warm things are quiet as can be. Maybe the fuel has to get warmed up?

The few I've been close to I could here the injector solenoids clicking. Maybe the timing differences between a cold or warm engine make the the issue show up better or worse at times.

Just trying to throw some ideas out there.

Mine's not totally quiet until it's warmed up good. Even if I'm easing around it'll run cool enough to make a tic tic tic sound. I've heard this same characteristic on all four of my Dodge Cummins trucks from two 12v's, an ISB and now my ISBe. I think it's normal. From outside it sounds more uniform. From inside I think we hear the one rear cylinder more pronounced so it sounds like one cylinder is doing it. It's a small I-6 as far as Cummins goes but a BIG six as far as automotive engines go. I'm very happy with the sound of it both engine and exhaust note. :D

Could it be our

famous exhaust mainfold? When it cools not making gud seal on the head - too much shrinking/expansion? Wonder if there will be a 3 part for this eng and when/cost... ... Still its the best eng/trk combo avail w/o going into a med/big rig.

RV manifold

Evan Beck said the manifold could be swapped out for the RV version, which is a 2 or 3 piece design & better casting. Has the same 2/4 split as the 03 Rams. Don't know the PN or cost or if it flows better or not.

Ok changed oil today and the noise is gone..... It was making the noise after the engine got warmed up. The seemed very thin and black for only having 2750 miles on it. Have had lots of diesels and for some reason Im thinking someone put the wrong oil in and it broke down to nothing very quickly. Will keep you posted on how long before it comes back. Now the only noise I need to loose is that clutch or throw out bearing noise... What a truck though...
