HELP!! engine messing up

was driving home on the freeway today and punched it to pass and at between 75-80 (2300rpm) it:

1. backfire from exhaust

2. whitish/grey smoke for about 5 seconds

3. lost power

so i downshifted to 5th and regained power. tried again and exact same thing happened. kept it at 70 mph and was fine. pulled of freeway to a stop sign, started off in 2nd and between 3rd and 4th got rpm to 2300 and same thing happened, w/out the backfire. got home and ib driveway put it in neutral and got rpms to 2500, no problems. did it twice. no codes showing.

i did fill up on the way to work this morning, but never go over 60 on the way to work.

ANY IDEAS?? THANKS GUYS!!

Change the fuel filter and take a look at your air filter.

I agree with RankRam... that's the first place to look.



Could also be a dying lift pump.

Sounds like you have a case of bad fuel. If you filled in the AM and had the problem in the PM, you have picked up some slop for fuel. Sounds more like you need to change the fuel filter or you may have to dump the fuel tank.

any codes/check engine light???



sounds similar to what i had when i had an intake air temp/pressure sensor fail [the baro side failed]. . engine was ok until about 1900rpm then the engine stumbled and massive defueling. .



if no codes, bad fuel. .

no codes thrown, no temp. increase, all the gages showed good. pulled air filetr out and was kinda mashed in in a circle like was trying to suk in air real hard. will clean it good, install and see what happens. thanks for all the help guys.

Well it sounds like it's starving for air. Is it the OEM air filter?



I have installed Fleetguard and OEM and have found the OEM provided more air when the engine needed it beyond 2500 RPM. The engine seemed to spool faster and there was less black smoke billowing out the tail pipe.

I too am having this problem,,BUT mines on a 98 ,,12 valve.

I was crusing about 80 for about 2 hours and no issues.

But on my return trip at about 72 mph it made the awful noise,, under passenger side ,,(exhaust)

I checked all gauges 3-4 boost,,700-800 egt,,,,,??

I have no ideas. .

I slowed it down for about 3 miles,,then sped up,,an it did it again,,so slowed down an accelarated through the gears to 2800 rpms an NO ISSUES. . ??

I pulled over just to see if any thing I could see,,left the rest area an it never bothered again.



HELP
