Have a 06 4x4 20,000 miles 3. 73 48re stock except for gauges. Smarty due next week. My question is,will I notice any improvement in a complete exhaust system , other than looks ?? Would I be better off just adding a snazzy tip? Also ,the stock air filter system has to be somewhat restrictive. Could it be opened up as I have read in these post or are one of the aftermarket boxes better? I sort of like having the engine compartment appear stock. If you were to do any of these ... Which Exhaust ... Which tip... which air box. ???Thanks in advance. Never had any trouble pulling the trigger on this type stuff 15 yeara ago,but now with all the choices out there I just want to buy one time

My understanding is that the stock airbox will flow plenty of air especially with a stock turbo. You could hole saw a 4" or so hole in the bottom to get some more flow. High Tech Turbo sells a cold air duct that attaches onto the bottom of the stock box. You could do that and get the AFE proguard 7 filter and have plenty. Like Mark said AFE pro guard 7 is the way to go, I personally have the stage 2 system.

I'm using the 5" Tip Dodge sells in the parts dept. I like it, looks better than the factory pipe. I don't understand why they can design nice exhaust exits for sedans and sport cars, but they just take a piece of raw steel, bend it 45 degrees and call it a day on a $30K+ truck? What gives. If so many people put "dual" exits tips on gasser trucks why don't they make it like that from the factory? If almost every Diesel truck I see has some sort of tip, be it a straight cut, slanted or turn it down tip. Why doesn't the factory put a nice tip on it before it leaves the assy line? I saw the '08 Superduty factory pipe, looked ridiculous, they welded what looked like a twin exit raw tip welded onto a single that look like two mini afterburners, looks real lame in person.

You could also do what I have done to my last two CTD including my 07' DRW. Soon as I got it home from the dealer the muffler came off along with all the 4" behind it and went with a turn down right behind the cab. It is a little louder than strait pipe with rear exit but there is no drone when doing this and allot of $$$ saved. Now if you don't like the loud and proud thing. You can still put a nice muffler on and a turndown right after it and use all the factory exhaust hangers. This not only reduces your EGTs greatly but also directs the soot to the ground. I have tried both the aftermarket intake kits and always end up back with the stock box with holes cut out and the down tube gutted with a AFE drop in filter. Sounds great and plenty of air flow and also lower EGTs ;)

When truck is in for service or warranty work... not even a second look is given to the intake box because everything looks factory on top! :-laf I have also had little to none particulate matter build up on the turbo blades with this set up. With aftermarket intakes the results were much worse! If you are set on spending $$$ on a intake the AFE set up is the one to buy without a doubt ;)

I have a 4" muffler brand new never used straight through design. Just get rid of the restrictions by cutting off the muffler & cat. Then get the afe stage 2 & get a nice tip. The 4" exhaust on your truck will be good up to 500hp+. Why change it?

Don`t buy an exhaust system. Mod the current one if your looking for change.

Keep the stock air box and mod it with the 4 inch hole and a pickup hose.

Get the new Amsoil Nano drop-in air filter (not a gauze filter, no oil and it filters better than OEM with higher flow rate) with the Cool Hose from the stock box to the turbo. :--)
