EDIT got it figured out, don't waste your time reading the long post... but thanks for looking

Hi

I was installing gauges in my buddies 2004 and fried something when hooking up the wire for the gauge lights. The directions I had were for an 03 and said to splice into the orange wire with the white tracer coming from the dash switch. There was no orange/white so I used a test light and found an orange wire coming from the head lamp switch that dimmed with the dimmer switch and figured this was the one. I think it's an orange/brown but it's hard to tell.

After connecting the wire for the gauge I checked it with the test light again at the gauge end and it was dimming like it was supposed to. Then I noticed a quiet buzzing sound coming from around where the door chime was, the door chime quite working, the interior light doesn't work, the dash lights don't work, the gauges don't work and the AC doesn't work. Turning the headlight switch and opening or closing the doors changes the tone of the buzzing. Pulling the A/C fuse makes the buzzing quieter but doesn't stop it. There's also a little red LED in the lower right of the dash that flickers with the buzzing sound.

Turning on the ignition makes the noise stop, makes the LED go out, the truck will run and makes the headlights work but that's it. We pulled every fuse and all are fine. We swapped around every relay they were all fine.

I really hope we didn't fry something expensive here and now I'm at a total loss for what it could be and I don't have any wiring diagrams for this truck.

Could it be the headlight switch? How do you remove it? I guess it'd help if I knew what that wire was really for.

Pleae HELP:confused:

Sign me up for a Darwin! We forgot the ground harness was un-hooked from under the dash to hook up the gauge ground. Once I realized it was still un-hooked and made contact again our problems went away (go figure ). I guess it came loose from the frame, lost contact and started the buzzing while doing some other work and we didn't realize for a while. Talk about feeling like an idiot .

Big Hammer, thanks for the PM and taking the time to check for me. Sorry to waste your time.

According to my 04 service manual, Orange/Brown is the correct wire. I'm not sure what LED you are talking about on the right side of the dash. Are there any aftermarket accessories on the truck? The only red light on the right side of the dash on my truck is the "door ajar" light.

Not sure what the red light was either, it was just a red dot LED that was flickering. Not my truck but he didn't know what it was either. It was towards the right on the instrument cluster.
