Just changed my fuel filter (1st time myself) and I bumbed the starter a few times. It started right up, ran a few seconds then quit and will not restart. I removed the filter and there is fuel in the canister. Re-installed the filter and still will not start. what next? Really need help on this.
Thanks
Bill

just be careful not to overheat the starter #ad

well, I just went back out and there is a port? on the back of the fuel filter housing that has a screw on cap. I took this off and bumbed the starter 3-4 times. Put this cap back on and it started right up. So, can someone shed some light on what I did? Boy, am I dumb or what.

Thanks
Bill

What you experienced is perfectly normal. When you took the original filter out,all the fuel ran out of the lines. You bumped the starter and it filled the cannister, but the hose between the cannister and injector pump will still have air in it. That's why it ran for a second or two then quit. It's completely normal to have to crank a little more until it starts on its own (but don't crank for more than 30 seconds at a time).

You didn't do anything by just taking the black cap off.

MikeR, you just made me feel a whole lot better. I also backed the canister lid off just a little. Everyone on here is just great. There is not a better bunch of guys/gals for info on our cummins.

Bill,

I went through the same thing when I did my first fuel filter a couple of months ago. All I had to do was crank it longer. When you're used to it firing up after about 1/2 second of cranking, that extra 10-15 seconds feels like an eternity! #ad

Same thing happened to me last month, when I changed the filter for the first time. Just cranked it a little longer, and it finally started.
