I am not sure if this is the infamous throttle linkage, but jeez, the go pedal got super soft all of a sudden. . What's the deal?? Truck still runs fine, but its almost like I could drop a feather on it, and it would go to WOT!  Please write back if you have a clue.

theres a couple of springs on the side of the pump were the linkage is at. I've seen them with one spring and two springs, and they have broken before. need to get a light and see if they are still there, or if they broke.

Usually it breaks one spring and we drive it forever until it breaks the other. I noticed on mine when I installed the Jake and had to add an extra spring, I was already missing one!!!! If you get it from Cummins it's a lot cheaper, or you could just use a throttle spring from the local hardware. That's what I used as an additional spring and it has lasted over 200K so far.

Also, the book shows a real good view, there is a third spring on the linkage further back. Make sure you have that one too.

so I take it that it's still driveable, just with a feather pedal? If so, then I can get by for the time being... it will just teach me to pedal lightly!!!:D Thanks y'all. . keep the replies coming!

I'd be careful. It would really suck to wreck your truck over a spring that costs $1. 38 and takes 90 seconds to install.

Actually, they're about $4. 25 from Cummins, but still cheap enough.

I just replace two broken springs on mine. Never knew they were broken until I was doing some work on that side of the engine to R&R the vacuum/power steering pump for the seal replacement (but that's another story). I'm sure the springs were broken/missing ever since I got the truck about a year ago. But the pedal definitely feels firmer now.

I have it rigged with zip ties for the time being... . pay day is tomorrow, so I will go over to the cummins house and get some new springs... . thanks for all the help!!

It sounds like the back spring(s) on throttle linkage popped off. (I saw a 97 they had two springs my Mule has one).

When mine popped off petal was lite (I found the spring on the ground). I could handle take offs with no problem and it seemed that things got working faster so I had faster take offs and max rpm came up quicker but the down side was many small bumps. I had to get my foot clear of the pedal or it would buck on me. After the second time it came off my mechanic tied it on, it is still on. Darn!:D

Ya mine broke when on a trip towing my trailer. When I was towing I was constantly going to fast and the old leg got tired of lifting. I was in the middle of nowhere. The old spring was still there just one end broke off. I just bent a loop on the one side and reinstalled. That was 2 years ago and it is still ok.

Mine broke one end off also. I was pulling onto the interstate,Tring to get ahead of a couple of Big Rigs, Got up to 75mph lifted my foot and the pedle stayed on the floor. At this speed the Cummins dosn't care what the brakes think. It is scary ,Finally reached down and pulled it back. As long as I didn't put it to the floor it would return. I pulled off at the next chance and found the spring ,rebent the broken end and went on.
