Could be smoked if it has gotten nice and hot before and didn't know it.

You have reverse and 1st. only, right?

My first guess would a valvebody problem given the oil condition. From looking in the '97 Service Manual I have, it is also suggesting as possible causes are either a governor circuit electrical fault or Front servo/kickdown band burned.

Have the bands ever been adjusted?

I will take a wild guess. I would bet that the forward clutch pack has began to descintegrate along with a possible overheating. The age of the transmission fluid has probably not helped. The descintegrating clutches have began to clog the valve body, thus causing it to stick in first gear along with reverse. This is very similar to what happens on older transmission when the valving on the governer becomes clogged.

Just another point, there are electonic sensors that could also have gone bad just inside the transmission pan.

Also, when you changed the fluid, you did fill it up and then check the fluid level with the engine running and the truck in park?

It also could be a million other things.

I would call Bill K. @ DTT (866) 504-4002. He is very good at helping members out and he is a wealth of knowledge.
