we have the entire rear drive shaft droped and disasembled. all u-joints are removed. we are trying to get the carrier barring off of the shaft and dont know how to approch it. we tried a number of things and dont know the 'trick'. has anyone had to do this before that can offer some practical help. also, where can i find a new carrier barring that will fit the '93 club cab?

any help is greatly appreciated. im down a truck untill we can get this thing figured out.

It is a press fit. The easiest is a set of jaws that will go around it and a press. FYI, unless you have exactly the right tool and know how to do you will mutilate the dust shield when changing it. Over 100k on mine without the shield so don't sweat it.

The bearing should be available at just about any parts store.

Good luck. :)

so if its a press fit, does this mean i have to press it back after i get the new barring on? good to know bout the dust shield (think the book called it a "slinger" or somthing). we were wondering about that tonight when we where trying different things to get her to come free. thanks for the help.

im glad to know ill be able to find the part easily, thats not always the case with these first gens.

thanks again

Or the approach I took was the local driveline shop, or actually a 45 min drive to the driveline shop:-laf, I let a place called Truck-Pro in Nashville,TN do my stuff they are resonable and Its 1 thing I dont have to fool with, course that depends on your budget. New spicers, High Speed Balance, and a Grease slinger boot, and I also done the front FWD shaft too, it was 90. 00, I didn't think it was to bad.

I have driven them off with a hammer and chisel. Start the new one the same way. Once you get it the width of the bearing past the end, it tapers thinner and slides right out.

on mine i set the bearing on an anvil and hit it. the third swing the outer part of it shattered... then i just beat on the inner part and it came right off with a chisel use a metal bench or any thing that wont give, you should be able to get it off... then i just used a piece of 2. 25(i think) pipe to beat it back on there... have fun

save yourself a lot a aggravation ,, take it to a shop with a press , I tried several ways and times on older truck s I had ,, on a press it only takes about a minute at best and most places don't charge much ,,itds better to press the new one on also rather than try to beat it on

On my '89 2WD, the only part that was press fit was the retainer collar on the shaft in front of the bearing. I worked it off carefully with a chisel and then the bearing came off with a little screwdriver prying. My new bearing set from NAPA was nice, but the new rear slinger was wrong. I just left the old one in place and used the new bearing and hammered the new retainer collar on using a section of pipe as a driver. Piece O cake!

Good luck.

well, thanks for all the replies. ive been real busy with work and working on the truck every spare minute i have. i took the drive shaft to work and had one of the mechanics take it off, he used a hammer and a nail set. said it wasnt that hard. he just beat off the retainer collar and then the barring slid off. the new one, we had to really wail on to get on. we used a pipe to fit on the bearing then pounded witha hammer. id didnt use the old slinger and the new bearing didnt come with one that fit, so i just left it off. and i didnt reuse the retainer collar becuase it wouldnt fit the the new bearing and the new bearing was so tight i wasnt worried bout it comming off.

thanks for all the help guys, really appreciate it!

As a side note to anyone reading this thread, you should never hit a bearing with a hammer or chisel. I have a friend who has been blind for the last 30 years because he was trying to remove a rear axle shaft bearing with a hammer. 'WEAR EYE PROTECTION" and use the right tool for the job, if you don't have the right tool, get it or take it to someone who does as stated above. Thanks, I'm finished. bg
