When changing from winter to summer tires on my 2001 2500 4X4 Quadcab automatic, I checked the brakes. To my unpleasant surprise, the rears were completely soaked in oil, the seals have gone... again. Second time in 105,000 miles. So, I'm thinking since I have to pull the axles, why not install a Lock-Right. The quesiton is, how do I figure out exactly what axle I have so I can get the right parts before I start? I've sent messages to both Dana and Lock-Right (Richmond gear) and have recieved no replies. The rear diff cover is marked:

Dana

46293 2

265 0

Rev D

09 07 95.

The metal tag between two cover bolts (one the driver's side of the unit) is inscribed:

52069468AJ

3:54 606242-1

Okay, so is this a Dana 70? How do I tell how many splines the axles will have?

Your help is greatly appreciated.

John.

dana 70 for sure--I can't recall the spline count--I'll see if I can find it out though, but 100% definitely it's a 70---chris

If your truck was assembled in Mexico City, other than the manufacturer brand (Dana) and ratio, the actual p/n or build number of the axle can only be found by removing the rear cover and trying to find the part # on the ring gear. I don't know if you need that p/n to get a posi unit or not, but you do need it to change axle ratio's. DC does not require or does not put Dana Build numbers (stamped) on them. This will only show up on US built trucks.

I went through this when checking on how and what i needed when thinking how and how much in changing ratio and adding limited slip.

Hope this helps.

David

All,

Thanks for the information. The truck was made in Mexico, so it sounds like I may have some adventures ahead of me. With luck I'll get the correct seals and Lock-Right the first time out and it will all be done in a few hours... it could happen.

Again, thanks for your time and knowledge,

John
