Transmission hunting

Well, I should have paid better attention when the pumps were being discussed! Mine took a dump today. Was about 40 miles from home. Took off from a stop sign and saw lots of smoke and smelled diesel real strong. Pulled over and popped the hood. Saw fuel EVERY WHERE! Was squirting out of the back side of the fuel pump, about the size of your finger. Is there something on the back side that could cause this or did the pump housing split? Looked back down the road and saw a stream of fuel that followed the truck.
Thank God I have AAA Plus, got a tow back home.

Can anyone tell me the best place to get a rebuilt pump? How hard is it to change and can I guess at the timing enough to get it in to a shop for final adjustments. Don't want to take it to a Dodge Dealer, don't trust them.

I have PW injectors and have seen posts about larger HP pumps. What do I ask for when ordering the pump. What is the difference in cost from a rebuilt to a new assembly?

Really didn't need to do this right now but old Green needs that transplant! Have noticed that the truck was smoking more on a cold morning than it used to. Thought it was from the new injectors.

Tried a search but didn't find what I needed.

HELP!!!!! #ad

Stan sorry to hear about the pump. Could the bolt that is removed when the pump timing is set come out (it's in the middle of the high pressure lines) or one of the high pressure lines worked loose.
Good Luck

Fuel squirting out of the backside?

Not a big deal, happens routinely...

It just needs a special o-ring replaced with a quad ring.

You do have to remove the pump to fix it, so it's a good time to have other things checked out. .

Thank you Power Wagon. Was afraid of a major malfunction.

As the general consenses is the pumps last 150K or so and I now have 151K, should I go ahead and have it rebuilt(or install a rebuilt one) and not have to worry about this for another 150K? I'm just glad this happened close to home!

Hey Paccool, Re-built is always cheaper and the pump can be up-graded. Mine had a bad throttle shaft bushing which was replaced with a better one. If the pump has to come off, follow the manual's instructions about getting it up on TDC and how to mark and lock the pump from turning so you won't lose the timing. Don't forget tin gear nut which hides behind the oil filler neck. I also recommend finding out what your local pump shop would charge to R&R the thing. I ended up taking the cowards way out and went for a burger while they dealt with the frustration. Either way, Good Luck.

150k on pumps? Uh oh. That kinda worries me because my engine has 166,900 miles on it. When I bought it, I didn't receive any history on repairs or anything (although I should have). The beast runs like a charm, and there hasn't been one thing wrong with it *knock on wood*. Could mine be about ready to go also? Scary... .

I have 195,000 on my 92. The pump is still working fine(knock on wood!).

Now watch... just because we said that, our pumps are gonna croak. But mine hasn't and I just drove it. Keep the faith... . these Cummins hold up better than any engine i've seen so far! #ad

240,000 + miles and counting on my 92. Just installed my P. W. injectors and it idels and runs much smoother. But I am stuck with a slushbox. It's great to see folks expression when you break the tires loose leaving a stop light. No problems with pump yet.

For those interested I am still trying to get a part number for the 265 - 275 hp rebuilt pumps for marine applications. Also trying to learn what the application would be like (temp. , boost, smoke), and price.

Shrimpy,

You should have seen MY eyes after I put in the PW injectors and got on it leaving a stop sign! #ad
Thought it was engine smoke till I realized it was tire smoke. Was really surprised with the acceleration.

I love driving this truck. Got to get this pump fixed though and soon. Am back to driving my Ford and I forgot how much of a dog it is. (gas engine) Have to be careful pulling out in front of someone, will get run over!

No, the pump's life is not 150K miles. It seems to have an overall life that's a lot longer than that, however, there's a number of minor things that do seem to fail randomly, from the o-ring on the advance cover (your failure) to throttle shaft bushings and o-rings to drive shaft seals.

Some of them seem to fail early for no understandable reason, while others go 3 and 4 hundred thousand miles.

paccool, now is the time to set the TDC pin on your truck, and have it timed to 1. 4 or so... All that work's gonna have to be done anyway, so there's no reason not to set things as you want them.

Come on guys- I got a quote today for a rebuilt exchange pump. Was almost $1200 for the pump only, no labor. I need some help locating a cheaper source. I have a shop out here that can put it in and tweak it for me but I need a pump first! I have several E-mails out requesting some pricing but have not heard back yet. You can E-mail me if you don't want to put on here.

All help appreciated!

Guys, thanks to all for the information and help. Now I can look for the best deal. Sure want to get this fixed, driving the Ford sucks! #ad

I'll let you know what I find out.

Stan

OK, here's the deal.

First, thanks to everyone for the help.

I had three very knowledgable people tell me that the problem was probably something as simple as a blown O-Ring. One was Power Wagon and one other was the shop he used to work at. Also talked with someone in Texas that said the same thing. Because of this, I decided to let the shop doing the work pull the pump, take to a pump shop and check out. If only a blown O-Ring, will be about $500 - $600 (parts and labor to pull and reinstall). If the pump has to be rebuilt, will end up costing me about the same if I went ahead and replaced the pump with a rebuilt unit.

After the pump is reinstalled, the shop will put on a Dyno and tune the pump for best performance.

Will let everyone know how it turns out. Thanks again.
