hey, guys i need help!

i finally installed my mag-hytec transmission pan. while i was at it i installed a new transmission filter and put in some amsoil ATF+4 transmission fluid. i didn't have a super low range torque wrench so i didn't adjust the bands.

for the last almost 13years before i bought the ram i drove a 5spd jeep and i've never experienced auto transmission problems, but i've got 'em now.

it feels like the transmission is slipping and acting up. why? i am going to adjust the front (outside) transmission band probably this friday or saturday.

any tips would be appreciated.

p. s. , can anyone tell me what tools are needed for a transmission band adjustment other than a box-end wrench, torque wrench? what do i need to adjust the band? is it a square head? torx?

p. p. s. is there an easier way of draining the transmission at the cooler other than taking off the front bumper?

thanks in advance.

I am sure you have checked this, but get it nice and warm and check your fluid level again. Make sure the truck is sitting level, and the trans is in neutral.

I know this is basic stuff, but it is often the problem. I adjusted my bandsd the other night, and ended up adding about three quarts more than the service manual indicated for the service I did. I figure it is because I had the pan off for many hours before I got time to finish the job and some fluid drained out of the TC.

Good Luck

so too much fluid will make the transmission go haywire?

did you drain anthing from the transmission cooler?

did you need any special tools other than the ones i mentioned above?

did you change the oil filter?

sorry for all the questions.

thanks... .

Ditto on checking fluid levels. My local 5 star dealer did a trans fluid change for me a few years back and under filled by about a quart. Worked fine on the way home, but the next morning it was about 40 degrees and it was acting very strange (fluid was half way between the two marks when warm). Took it back to the 5 star and they over filled it! This story goes on but I won't bore you with my dealings with the idiots at the 5 star!

Was the old fluid burnt really bad? It may be the new fluid cleaning it up. I'm a 5speeder, but I have heard of this before.

It definitely sounds as if the fluid is low. A remote possibility is the wires going to the governor solenoid could also be pinched by the filter if care was not taken to avoid them when screwing down the filter. I Have seen both of these things happen after transmission services. Hope this helps!

You need a 1/4" drive torque wrench, a couple of those square sockets, don't remember the sizes.

I disconnect my return line from the cooler and stick it in a 2 1/2 gallon jug, run the engine in nuetral, and pour in as much new atf as I'm draining. When I see I've changed 17 quarts, I stop.

The men you want to try and contact are TDCanuk and Bill Kondolay. See what they have to say about that and maybe they can offer some better words of advice than I/we can.

it sounds like you are getting good advice right here, good job guys, however when you've checked make sure to post your status so we can see where your at, sometimes there is an oddball thing that is not obvious that is the cause. May not mean anything to you but may to me or someone here.
