Help installing in bed fuel tank

I just bought a used in bed auxiliary fuel tank. It is the L shape that allows my over the rail tool box still. It is steel with an aluminum cap. It does not have any hoses or connectors to it, but does have a front bottom outlet. I'm looking for any help on what the best way to plumb into the fuel system is. I would like to have a pump transfer fuel to the main tank when low. Any help is appreciated.
 
I'll tell you how the tank works in my old Fo d. Out of the tank through filter, to pump (just a universal elect. fuel pump) and tee'd into the overflow hose on the factory tank. I have a lighted rocker switch, so hopefully I don't forget and overflow. I've forgotten many times but have never overflowed. Good Luck. John
 
I have mine hooked up just like ropinfool2. Works just fine, just be sure to remember to turn the switch off when the tank gets full. Do not ever leave unattended, as you will run the tank over every time. (experience talkin' here) makes the alaska oil spill look tiny when about 50 gallons of diesel hits the garage floor.
 
Aux Fuel Tank

I have seen many tanks done the way the other folks mentioned. The only thing I would add is that you power your pump on an Ignition On hot wire so if you happen to park your rig and forget to turn it off you will not continue to fill the tank like my ole man and stevegeorge did. Even a cup of diesel on the garage/shop/driveway is messy.



Also - General observation is that a DOT approved tank will not have any connections in the bottom and instead use a pickup tube from the top. Pretty sure this is to eliminate any problems from broken tubes, pipes, hoses that would allow the tank to empty by gravity.

I have been working on a similar setup in mine for some time now and am almost done. I ran a 1/2" I/D Pipe down in the tank from the top and left it about 1 1/2" from the bottom. #2 Rated hose connects to that and the line hooks into the fuel filler hose and goes into the stock tank. I just used an old Stock LP from the 24 valve cummins that is still capable of pumping 6-7 psi. and mounted it to the bed of the truck. Ran a switch up in the cab to turn it on and off. All sounds good but I havent been able to test it out yet, maybe this weekend, we'll see.

I also did as ropinfool2 did. I found that 1/2" copper pipe and fittings like you use in a house fit good in the vent hose on the fill pipe.
 
I don't know how to do it. . . but I can tell you how not to do it. Guy before me just poked a hole in the bed and gravity fed to the main tank filler. Outlet is at the bottom of my steele tank. YUP, you guessed it. That puppy is running lots of rust into the main tank and, so far anyway, being trapped in the fuel filter. Miles I run I have to change filters way more frequently time wise than most. With this added self polution going on it's about a 2 week deal now. When I find my body/bed I'm gonna get an aluminum tank.
