First occurance:
At 1/3 tank. Truck intermittantly idles correctly then idles probably 200 rpm slow. Full power otherwise. Hot cold, no difference. Filled tank and added extra dose of conditioner. Fuel drained from filter clean. No problem several weeks.
Second occurance 09/11/01:
At 1/3 tank. 44 1/2 miles from home truck runs good one moment and then won't idle the next, dies as I pull into the fire station parking lot. Next morning I have to crank it a long time before it gets fuel. Filled tank added conditioner. Runs flawless.
Fuel filter replaced at 8K miles and appears clean. Checked terminals to fuel shutoff solonoid.
Found what appeared to be an air leak where the inlet line goes into lift pump, based on ever so slight dampness on line. Cleaned and reseated it and saw no further dampness.
Bought lift pump at set it behind seat.
Third occurance 09/25/01:
Tank full. Drove about 20 miles and began to notice loss of power. Truck would not idle unless you held about 1/3 throttle. No miss, just no power. Replaced lift pump on side of road. Old one would manually pump fuel. New lift pump built pressure with hand pump lever and sprayed out cracked loose pressure line. Nothing seen in fuel filter draining. 1K miles on this one. Had to spray WD40 in to get it to start. Still would not idle, low power, but no miss. Drove it home. Low EGT and as I got closer to home, it lost some more power. Would run about 45mph WOT in 4th. Not enough fuel to hold speed in 5th. 3 miles from home, I shifted out of 3rd into 4th, when I strepped back down on the throttle everything begins to run like nothing ever happened.
I called the local Bosch factory authorized repair shop and had never seen this but suggested checking the return line for obstruction. They said that the pump will not intermittantly fail, it just fails.
I called Mark at TST and he has never seen the problem but figures it could be the fuel shutoff solonoid. It seems to click good every time and if you pull the power wire, the engine will die in any throttle position. Ditto says pump just fails.
I called Piers and talked to his answering machine and am awaiting a return call.
Any one got any ideas?
