I was trying to hard wire in my radar detector to the over head console on my '02 SLT with no computer. I went to splice my ground into the black wire that goes to the overhead lights which i assumed to be the ground. There was a flash a pop, and then no radio and no other interior lights. Also the console that i had unplugged and off was hooked back up to the plug and nothing so there is no power at the pig tail from the roof. So all told I am out a radio, interior lights, the cupholder light, and cargo lamp. What did I do!!!!!!!!

And i checked every fuse i could think of.

Uh-oh. All of us electronic/electrical guys know that these systems have three basic elements installed wich make them work:

1. Smoke

2. Bright light

3. A loud pop. (Optional sizzle or zap available)

If any one of these elements escapes the component or system in question, it will cease to function.

It is worth noting that attempting to re-insert these elements back whence they came is futile. (I speak from practical experience. )

The only system which I have observed which continues to operate during and after a smoke event is a Dodge Cummins Diesel.

Very cleaver but that doesnt help my situation. I pulled my CD player and the fuse on the back of it is fine. All the light bulbs are intact but also no functioning. I have checked the fuses in the engine compartment, as well as on the driver side access panel. Nothing amiss at either place. My multimeter should be here soon. Where do i start. The hoodlight is also out. So the grand total is dome, cargo, map, and hood lights, and radio/cd player.

I have my service manual out for my '99. I'm looking for your circuit, assuming (uh-oh) that the wiring might be similar. Did you check for power at the black wire before you attempted to wire in your radar detector?

Andy

This still sounds like a fuse, but will keep looking at diagrams

Was a fuse. I. O. D. #12 in the cab. It is in a funny little socket. Last one to get checked. The most random stuff is run off that fuse. Power mirrors, radio, interior lights, underhood lights.
