Tragedy Strikes Renton Family
Renton, WA

On Monday night, tragedy struck the Collins Family of Renton, WA. Sometime between the hours of 8 p. m. and 11:30 p. m. two members of the Collins household, Kitty and Muffy, disappeared. No one is really quite sure what happened, but foul play is suspected. When asked, Scott Collins said "They had been acting up lately, but I am suprised that they disappeared. I wonder where they could be?" Mrs. Collins response was "WHAT??? I CAN'T HEAR YOU!" She seemed a little distraut over the loss of Muffy and Kitty, but all indications are that she will recover.

The police suspect that the crime was perpetrated by the "Silencer Ring," a band of villians whom have been known to operate in the area. The trade mark "calling card" of the "Silencer Ring" is a whistling sound. Police are baffled by the source of the whistle, and continue to investigate to this day. Police caution against approaching the "Silencer Ring" directly, as they are considered "armed (with BOMBs) and dangerous. "

It must be the same gang that hit at the Harvey's house here in Ca. The police found signs that Kitty was hid in the shed, but Muffy is no where to be found.
But I also was advised that a 20 click dose of AFC would help ease my fustrations.

Hello there! Thinking of doing the same real soon. Since some of the trucks did not come with a cat, are the ones that did required to have one? Or should I gut the kitty?

The trucks with a cat are required by law to meet EPA emissions. Many do "gut" the cat, or loose it all together. I notice you live here in Colorado. Are you in one of the counties required to do annual emissions testing? If so, "gut" at your own risk.

I just moved here to Colorado and need to get my truck registered and emissions tested before the end of the month. I will try and find out how strict they are about the cat (or if they even care). Will see if they inspect to see if the cat is on the truck and if they check to see if it has been tampered with.

If anyone has questions about the diesel emissions testing for the Denver area let me know and I will try and get an answer when I go in.

I don't think there is one person on this site who has failed an emissions test due to removing the cat. Most if not all states that test use a opacity(smoke)test,the cat has no effect on smoke.
I would never gut the cat or throw it away though,you never know when they may come up with a test that will require the cat. You'll be $600 ahead if the cat is still working if you need it,replace it with a straight pipe.

Do any of you straight piped guys have a bad resonating problem in the 2000-2100 range? I did. Fixed it though.

Shoer 1, the 98. 5 and newer does not have a cat, but it does also have a resonator. You need not worry about taking them off.

That really has to depend on the state you live in. I made it a point to look up the DMV title dealing with exhaust. For us, it very clearly (no maybe's) says that a working muffler MUST be in place. Grin, I took the muffler off anyway and left the resonator there. As far as I know... its a muffler. Right?

Man I love this site!! Thanks for all the input! I don't live in a county that requires emission testing..... yet... . but I want to be fairly carefull. But, It seems what I thought was a cat, is actually a resonater! Can you guys tell me what it's role in life is? THanks a bunch!

Shoer1, I'm not sure if I'm explaining this quite correctly, but... . my understanding of a resonator is that its hollow and is built to a specific size for the system to knock out/diminish vibration/resonance in the exhaust system. The muffler then takes care of the noise aspect.
Folks, please jump in if my understanding is not correct.

RHarvey - first the muffler guy put on a twister can(5" auger flighting inside a can)(its only about 2' long - exhaust twists about 1 1/2 turns- nothing else in there) which he said had been working well with other diesels. That took it down by half - went back and tried to find a used resonator from a Dodge. Could't find one so he put a glass pack(makes a good resonator) up stream the twister. I can't amagine these add ons deminish the affect of a straight pipe too much?

Aaaahhhh much better- especially on those long trips. #ad


Bad news is - the sound level outside is back to stock #ad
