Help - Long Crank on 05 2500 Dodge G56

My friend has an 05 2500 Dodge, built June 2005, that has long cranks frequently but not consistantly. I found the TSB (18-003-006) for the 06 Dodge (which includes trucks made from June of 05 to Nov of 2005), but when he took it to the dealership all the numbers matched up for the TSB except one. Therefore, the dealership would not flash the computer (truck is still under warranty) and if they flashed the computer he would have to void warranty.



Any ideas on how to fix the problem?

Don't worry, the TSB didn't fix my 2006 either. I am waiting until I hear about the real fix here on TDR, then I will get my dealer to fix it.

there is a new flash out now that has to do with making the fan come on sooner in our trucks, also to make your dummy oil pressure gauge read higher when hot. all you have to do is say something like my oil pressure gauge reads low when hot and you will get this new flash for your ecm. all of the flashes supersede to the newest flash so in turn you are getting all of the old updated flashes also.

I had the same problem with my '05. Long cranking times and couldn't figure it out. Started to think what the difference was between the nv 5600 and the g56... . the flywheel. As it turns out for me (and probably most others) is that the DMF once the starter turns it the center hub jerks with the compression of the motor making the crankshaft position sensor read wierd readings on the other side of the crank. In other words, once I out a solid flywheel, the problem went away.

I'm not jumping down anyone's throat but come on... Put the key in, turn it and don't let go until it starts. Sometimes it starts right away sometimes it doesn't. I'm not picking on SBloedow directly but coming straight from a guy that used to install car electronics on a daily basis, things happen. I have one woman who I installed a remote starter for 2 years ago has called me to "fix it" 3 times (usually about every 3 months or so), and everytime I tell her to put a new battery in the remote. She insists that I look at it, so just like your dealer I do to make her happy. Then I put a $3. 00 battery in it and charge her $25. 00 for my time.

I have never seen anything from dodge or cummins on exactially how many revolutions your truck is supposed to turn before it starts. So it's just your opinion on what is defined as "excessive". Just take a second and think about this. They have a "dummy oil pressure gauge flash", which just proves the engineers at DC are laughing at you, since they made computer reflash to trick your already fake gauge into reading higher just to make you feel better. :-laf



My $. 02 is to stay out of the dealership all together unless your buying.

Thank you for the suggestions (on how to fix the problem). Will share the ideas with my friend and see if he can get any of them to work.

In the mean time - Any other ideas?



My friend will probably continue to go to the dealership to get his truck fixed because it is still under warranty. In terms of what defines a "Long Crank"... as long as it is under warranty and not cranking "normal" - we want it fixed because something is not right. The truck should not crank "normal" some times and then crank differently other times. Another reason we would like it fixed is to make sure that it could not cause other problems down the road or to make sure that there is not something critically wrong with the truck.

My 06 G56 has long cranks too... maybe 1/3 of the time. My 05 NV5600 always started right up. If it doesn't start up in a "normal" amount of time I release the key and then try again, it usually fired right up the 2nd time though rarely I have to try a 3rd time.
