help me convince the muffler man...

Went to ask a couple of shops about replaceing my resonator and muffler with a stright 3" pipe. The guy asked if it had a cat, and I said no, it has a resonater. He cralwed under and said it looked like a resonater, but didn't know they had no cat. He then went inside and called someone and they talked about it. The guy on my end of the line said... " No it looks like a resonater though. " After he got off, he said this guy says it's a cat so extra $$$ and he has been in the bussines 28 years. I said no, it's a resonater, "Bet the cost of the exhaust job. " He says "Well no, I can't do that. "



Correct me if I'm wrong yall, but I have always been told it's a resonator and the a muffler on mine(check sig).



Help me think of things to tell him that 28 years of expirence don't mean a damn thing to an educated owner. I checked the owners manual and warrenty info, but nothing.

Its not a cat. 28 years, yad yada yada. Tell the old man youll bet his shop on it. The older trucks had cats, even some of the 24 valves did, but yours doesnt... . unless they just started putting them back on, and I have yet to see that. I learned along time ago, when you want facts, talk to someone who deals primarily in what you want to know about... like the TDR and diesel Dodges. He may know mufflers and pipes, but he sure as heck doesnt know about your truck. Tell him he can either bet his shop, or take a swift kick to the nuts once you prove him wrong. Cost of the exhaust ... up the anti on him since he likes to bet.

What States did they get sold in?



Off the Subject a little;

I think I have the Only 24v Cummins with the Breather Tube the same as the 12v trucks.

I have no problems like puking oil out the breather tube when at extreme angles like others have had with newer 24v trucks.

Go check the cummins site. It proudly states that the 24V in the Dodge Ram meets all emissions with out at Cat or EGR. Ran into this very same problem when I had my Walker put on. I however anticipated it and had a printed copy of the cummins info in the cab.

The cats were only used on the 94- early 98 12v engine that are mechanically controlled.



The late 98- 2002 are electronically controlled and do not have cat converters. These 24v engines are alot louder than the 12v,that's why they have the sound resonator along with a muffler. They make a sharp raspy sound when they hit 2000rpm... hence the addition of the resonator.



NO 24 valves ever had a cat.

If the guy at the shop had a clue in the first place he would know that the emmitions information sticker under the hood will say if the vehicle is catalist equiped. Or he could check the VIN.

I told the dumb-dumb that they (Dodge) has not put a cat on a diesel since they put 24 valves in back in '98 put he still had to look.



I am the one who said to bet the cost of the exhaust job. So it is somewhere under the hood, where? These dumb-dumbs wouldn't know what the internet was if they were using it, so the Cummins Web page is out. I probly will not go back to them cause of stupidy.

Go somewhere else. Sounds like it's not worth the time to argue, because they will not be convinced.



Another angle, have this technical wiz find out how much it will cost you to buy a new Cat, when yours goes bad, of course. Have him give you a call when he finds the right part number.



P. S. , mine cost me $35. 00 to have done. It shouldn't cost much more than this anywhere you go.

your all correct that the 24V doesnt now have a cat...

but I sat in a conference with some engineers and program managers from Cummins last year and they said with the new much tighter restrictions coming they were not soo sure that they could keep the cat off in the future. It may yet reappear by 2005 or soo. They commented on how the restrictions are going to really choke the power out of the ISB with the on road applications as the diesel emissoin restrictions come in to being.

Phords are still running cats, that I'm aware of.

great to him!

Thanks for the offer man, I really appricate it. I live in Nacogdoches right now because I am going to SFA. I plan on being in Huntsville before to long (maybe the weekend) to visit some friends there.



The loudness does not bother me one bit, I had a '97 chevy stright piped for 2 years. The best sounding ram that I have heard in a while is the one that Danandme had at the rally. Granted his is a 12 valve, it is stright 3" pipe, sounded way too good.



Plus I'm 21, I need to be loud, plus still learning life's lessons, and redneck to the bone (just don't dress that way).



Another quick question though... . will the stright pipe smoke more because it is less restricive?

the only type of emission controls for a diesel engine are



1. Particulate trap.



2. catylitic converter



the part in question is neither of those. it is a resonator, designed and placed there for a few reasons. first, being a requirement by the manufacturer of the vehicle (Dodge)to reduce incab noise. secondly it is used to further cool exhaust gases, which in turn reduce the amount of harmfull gases emitted (particulates). and thirdly to meet federal noise emission standards to allow the vehicle to be approved to use our federal highway system.



if gramps cant understand that these vehicles burn clean enough to not negate either of these two devices. then maybe you should find a new shop that has educated ASE certified technicians. for your future exhaust work.

TxDieselKid,, I'm Hurt!! Danandme's truck was better than mine?!?! heheh,, Just jokin' , I'm all right.





When I took my Muffler/Resonator it cost me $60. A bit high, but the Muffler man was mighty proud of his 3" pipe he was selling me (good grief)



The Best place to sit in a truly straight piped truck is in the passenger seat,, the reonance is the least there,, it's actuall hard to even tell the truck is straight piped.

The two worst places to sit... Behind the passenger seat, or the driver's seat.



One thing I found out with my truck coming home from the LSTDR Rally,, If ya go faster than ~78MPH the drone starts to dissapear, and at 85MPH it's gone, from that speed,, there is no drone till about,, um,, 100-110MPH then a little bit of drone starts coming back. (at that speed who cares about a little drone?)



Right now, my truck is, hehe,, "Obnoxious" all ya got to do to get everybody within 50' to look at you is romp on the go pedal once,, and for a 100' radius,, just romp two more times. . hehe,, ask me how I know...



If you are gonna go for a custom exhaust,, go for stacks,, Don't do like me... My truck needs a wash every 200 miles of driving. . the back quarter panel, bumper, taillights, and tailgate are sooted "Heavily". Of course,, I have DD1's, and my foot is Plutonium, so that doesn't help... and the COMP box on 3/5 isn't helping either. . but, ya know,, I'm in the same boat as TxDieselKid,, Old enough to know better,, but to young to care.

P. S. AJB, Get a good shop to do it,, any exhaust leaks make the noise in the cab much worse,, and with an auto ya don't ever get a break like ya do with a 5, or 6-speed.

Also a straight piped cummins won't pop,, it's just a HUM, so it gets annoying. HUUUMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM,, if you let off the pedal, it gets quieter, and if ya push down, it gets louder. Doesn't change tone unless you increase/decrease RPM

Me with stacks... . do you really see that? How about with my little girlfriend driving. That would be cool though, stacks and this little 5'5 girl getting out.



As for washing the truck I don't care. There is no such thing as too loud, hummm or pop (I love your descriptions of exhaust noise).

Tell the dumb-dumb call the closest Dodge dealer and try to get a cost on a cat for a 2001 and watch the expression on his face. That is what I did, (problem solved)
