Have a few CTDs, My 2001 Has 185,000 miles on it and is going down. Bad Blow by. (I mean smoking out from under the truck enough to make you sick) When you open the oil fill cap when it is running it is a pulse from one cylinder. When under a load, I can see smoke in the headlights of the cars behind me.

I am a little disappointed, but I bought it used, and it has always been a problem, only now it is getting worse. Truck still runs strong, but it can only be a matter time.

The point is, I have located a replacement engine. I think... .

The block will for sure work in my truck according to Cummins, but they can not be sure of the pistons. There are many variations according to them. I am asking advice from this board. A new engine will run about $8000. Cummins does not have a part on a re-man short block (but he thinks he could get one, just not in his computer)

Part numbner on the block is "Assy 3935938" on a sticker.

Please follow this link below. I have several pictures of this engine. Let me know if you think it will work, and WHAT DO YOU THINK IT IS WORTH?

The crank is from a '98. 5 - '00. 0. In mid year '00 or '01 they got rid of the tone ring on the crank for the CPS. Other than that, it looks just fine to pop into your truck. You will need a complete rebuild kit as you will need all the gaskets and seals.

There should be a number stamped on the drivers side of the motor towards the front. Should be something like a 53 54 55 or 56. Even could be a series of numbers, but normally not.

So, will this crank work in my 01 six speed? What are your thoughts on the pistons?

The engine is laying on it's side, and is too heavy for me to lift up (although it sounds like I need to bring some help and check it out. It is a Mexico block (cast into it on the front)

The pistons are regular old 215 pistons for the 98-00 24-valve. Compression on them is lower than on the 245 HP engines. 16. 3:1 vs 17. 0:1. You could use this shortblock in your '01 6-speed without any problems. Just get rid of the CKP tone wheel. Those things are known for self-destructing.

So, Do I Buy it, (How much it it worth) or do I go with a good used engine (maybe I can get lucky and get a engine from New Orleans!)
