I have a 98. 5 4x4 auto with 85K on the truck. . I am currently in the process of moving when my auto started jump in and out of TC lockup. It does fine shifting through the gears, but when it hits TC lockup, it will jump in and out of OD. It does not seem to do it as bad when I lay my foot in it while in overdrive. I am in a desperate situation since I am in the process of moving an hour and a half away. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Dieselheads :( :( :(

This won't fix it but try turning the OD off and then not turning it back on untill you get to a higher speed than where it usually shifts.

I did a search for you and there were some problems with noise from the ECM causing eratic shifts and there is a filter available to cure that. They also discussed the APPS or something like that but I do not know what that is.

Hope you make it home OK.

Look @ transmission Problem in this same forum and try the same thing I suggested... .

sounds like it should work for you as well- - -

I had the same problum but also the cruse would disingauge , that made me look at the brake sw. [ becouse it turns off both when the brake peddle is depressed ] unlike every other car and truck I've worked on the peddles were adjustable , mine was'nt so I HOT GLUDED a small washer on the foot of the sw. now everything works fine , oh by the way I found out that the dealer replaced the TQ [first owner].

This problem is probably caused by electrical noise spikes and tends to get worse as the truck ages. The best fix for me was DTT's noise filter ( about $40) DTT toll free 1 866 504 4002

Have you done an APPS reset yet? I`m not too familiar with 24v's but I think it goes like this:

Remove negative battery terminals for 30min-1hr.

Put back on negatives (doh  )

Turn truck to 'on' but do not start

Slowly move the pedal from zero to full a few times. (real slowlyyyy)

If I`m wrong, do a search for APPS reset or something. This may help. .

good luck

have you checked your trany fluid ??

How long has the fluid been in there a posible Flush out and replacement of the fuild may be a cure.

Thanks for all of the valuable info. I took both of the negative cables loose and I left them for 4 or 5 hours. After I hooked them back up, I turned the switch to the on position without cranking the truck. I then slowly depressed the accelerator fully down and back up slowly for four or five times. Ran the truck and no problems whatsoever. What did I just do, did I reset something in the transmission. I just done what all my diesel friends told me to. Thanks again

Oo. You just reset the APPS/ TPS -sometimes you have to help it "find" itself- Glad it worked out for ya!!Oo. Oo. Ahh the fun of electronics... ... ...

take the terminals off, then take a wire brush to the terminals and posts until they shine. Autozone or a parts store sells red anti-corrosion spray, hose em down with that. I upgraded to brass terminals when I changed my batts a few months ago, no corrosion yet. .

good luck

I just looked back at some of my posts on this problem and was surprised that they were 4 years old. I cleaned battery terminals many times, replaced batteries, replaced the APPS ($400), cleaned connections and tried everything I could think of. The problem was, anything I did fixed it temporarily. Some say to reset the APPS but I think just removing and replacing the battery terminals will sometimes make the problem go away and resetting the APPS has nothing to do with it. It's a tough problem and could be caused by other things but I think the DTT noise filter will fix most cases. It has been close to a year since I got a DTT filter and it has worked perfectly so far.
