At what point does a small set of twins...

Ready to buy FASS but...

currently on the truck is a 60mm 6 blade HX40 w/ a 16w turbine housing

in the garage I've got:

HX35, a 12cm gated housing, and a 14cm gated housing

HT3B, a 22cm undivided housing, and a 26cm undivided housing

for now I'm wanting to keep boost in the 55-57psi range. (ARP studs, stock head and gasket)

originally I was planning on running the HX35-12, porting the wastegate orifice, and running a big external gate as well, and blowing into the 22 housing.

concensus says I'll be happier w/ the 26 housing... less chance of overboosting, and when more fuel and boost comes down the road, I'll be happier overall.

I was still planning the hX35-12, but I just picked up this 14cm housing, and the HX35 I've got is a little sloppy. my HX40 is less than 10k miles old.

I've been thinking about running the hX40 cold side w/ the 14cm HX35 hot side. BUT, I wouldn't mind getting some cash back out of my HX40.

your thoughts/experiences?

many thanks,

Forrest

What you use will depend on how much power you want to end up with. Personally I am going with a PDR 35 with a modified 12 housing and a HT3B with a 23 divided housing. Basically the PDR towing twins but am going to use a 12 housing plus a external WG off the manifold, not the 14 housing. I am personally just looking to keep the 500 HP I have now but get rid of the lag. Not looking to take over Opie's spot as HP king of Muncie. ;) If you are thinking that you are going to break the 500 mark by a respectable margin then you will probably want to go with the HX-40/16 --- HT3B/26 setup. Flows much better because of the 40 on top not choking the motor like the 35 housings. :)

I think the 40 on the cold side with hx35 and 14cm on the hot side

and the 26cm housing on the bottom would give you minimum lag and is the most streetable, with a wastegate that by passes the small turbo. You are on the edge of blowing the headgasket. Don't do the twins until you are either fireringed or oringed the engine. Merv

I was under the impression that the stock head gasket was good to 55-60psi w/ head studs.

are you saying don't run a big external gate and just rely on a ported 14cm wastegate housing?

thanks,

Forrest

from what i hear some are and some are not. i would say new head studs and marine gasket. also depends what you are doing with you timing how the head gasket lives. i would not go over 15. 5 with that kind of boost and high timing. but i am not expert and thats who you need to call.

i am going to use a usb1 with the ht3b. same big wastegate feeding the large charger along with a gate for the large charger for a bit more control of the entire get up. both controlled from in the cab. or so the plan goes. ;)

headgasket blowing 50-55psi... ... ..... i just blew mine with a regular hg and an o-ringed head pushing something between 50-65 for boost, worthless 50# gauge.

aparently it happens... . Piers said it was probably due to improper re-torquing... so maybe it will hold... . mine lasted a while before it died. it was kind of a dragged out process too.

i tell you what i went from 35's to one 40, back to 35s, because they held longer to this wastegated usb1. there isnt much difference in spool up. the turbo seems to agree less with the auto trucks though.

i am really excited to see what it will do for me in the twins get up. unfortunately unless some funds falls from the sky i am going to have to wait until oct-nov before i can fund this project. a couple people have been kind enough to give me a helping hand and get me going in the right direction, and i am really thankful to them for that. for all of you folk that have all that spare change lyin' around and not using it ;) patience is key i spose. although i am quite enviouse of you older guys that can afford to play like you do... . kidding

Hi Forrest

What I meant to say is run a non wastegated housing and a big external wastegate. On the issue of the stock headgasket marine or other, and studs, its wishful thinking. I have already tried it,it did not hold. If you are taking the head off to stud it and replace the gasket please oring it at least. Merv

I'm going to run a wastegated housing no matter what. I've got a flange cut out of 1/2" plate that mates to the back of the HX35. something about hanging that big ole turbo off of a little 3" v'band flange just doesn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling.

as an added bonus, I should be fine w/ a 38mm external as the ported stocker should take up the slack should there be any.

I was just planning on pulling the head bolts and dropping the studs in and torquing them down...

if the head comes off, it's getting o-ringed.

maybe I'll just o-ring it from the get go and be done w/ it.

I've just seen a number of guys hold 55psi w/ studs and a stock gasket.

I'm on a shoe string budget as it is... the extra money for head work wasn't in the cards right now. :(
