My brakes started squealing when pedal is pressed and now they are squealing anytime the pedal is pressed. I am going to change them soon. I am going to use Sam Peterson's pads. I have never changed pads on anything before. I bought the service manual to help me out. Can any one give me any tips or advice. I sure would appreciate it. I don't want to mess anything up.

I believe I will have to have my rotors turned because they have about an 1/8" groove in them. The truck only has about 31,000miles on it.

Once again thanks for the help

Eric

I dont know about the 02's but i was told buy a guy ( dont know if it is true) that on my 99 i cant get my rotors turned. I have to call the dealer and ask caus i have never heard of anything like this before.

I think the '02 rotors do come off. When you pull the wheel, look at the studs on the hub for little rings/washers. It may or may not have them, they are retaining clips put on at the factory. Remove them and throw them out if it does, then the rotor should come off after you remove the brake caliper assembly. It may be rusted on, so you may have to whack the crap out of it with a rubber mallet to break it loose.

According to the shop manual for my '99 4x4, the rotors will come off, but it's a bit more work. After removing the caliper, you have to remove the wheel hub. Then you unbolt the rotor from the hub, press the wheel studs out of the rotor, and reverse the process with a new one.

I'll be doing a brake job pretty soon, myself, and I'm not sure how much work that entails--anyone here actually done it?

Ya, but an eighth inch groove! I doubt it. That's a bunch to be turning out. Maybe you're luckier than I.

Cheers,

I believe that I can have the rotors turned. I don't think there that bad yet. Does anyone have any tips on changing the pads.

Thanks,

Eric

elamb: I`m not sure about the 2002, but the 99 is quite an involved process, particularly if the rotors have rusted on. Yes, they are cuttable, if you find someone with a rotor machine big enough. Cutting them on the truck will be quite expensive. Might want to call a diesel or rig shop to see if they have such a piece of equipment. As for getting them off, you have to do what tbrudder says (again I only know of the 99), but we hammered out the wheel studs with a piece of 3/4" brass rod. Your service manual should detail that stuff. . Good luck

Like sticks said, just pull the retaining washers and the rotors come off pretty easy. You'll need a long breaker bar to get the caliper bolts off. They're torqued to 200+ ft/lb. Use a #46 torx socket to disassemble the caliper. Make sure you use the lube that Sam sends w/ his pads. Lube the crap out of the slide pins. IMHO, that is the number one thing that contributes to premature pad wear. Ask me how I know. At least you don't have to deal w/ adj. the rear brake shoes.
