I just received a call from my Grandfather who has a 2001 CTD. He changed the fuel filter on it today, and followed the owners manual instructions. He DID NOT refill the new filter before installing it, but instead relied on the fuel pump to prime it. Anyway, he primed it three times with the pump, then started it. It ran fine, then died... . it wouldn't restart. Then, he took the new one off, and it was empty, so this time he filled it by hand, but now the pickup still won't start. The lift pump is still working fine.

What I think is wrong is that the fuel lines have an airlock in them. I'm pretty sure I've read this before and that all you have to do is loosen one injector and it primes the entire system... but which one? He already tried #1 (one closest to the radiator) but that didn't work. So, which one is it? I think, to me at least, this sounds just like running the fuel tank dry and then having to re-prime it, but I'm not 100%. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Josh.

Well, as long as the lift pump is actually pumping fuel, this should be simple.

First, cracking one injector line does not bleed the whole system.

Have him do the old 'bump the starter' trick to get the lift pump to run for 25 sec. Do this 5-6 times, then try to start the engine. If it still doesn't start, crank it for 30 sec at a time with two minutes between cycles. Do that twice. Still no start... Crack a few injector lines, crank it until some fuel squirts out. Tighten the lines, and start the engine. Usually you won;t have to crack the injector lines... Doing to 30 sec crank cycles a couple of times does the trick. :D

BOMB ON

I found this at Fritz's website:

Turn the key to the run position. Bump the starter for a millisecond and let the key stay in the run position as if you had actually started the engine. You will hear the lift pump cycling for about thirty seconds, which will circulate fuel and push any air in the system back to the tank. Bump the starter several times, allowing the pump to cycle each time, then attempt start the engine.

If the engine starts but then dies, bump the starter several more times and allow the fuel pump to run until it stops each time. After several cycles, attempt to start the engine. Repeat the process until the canister is full and the engine starts and runs. With a dry canister, I cycled the pump three times, then started the engine. It promptly died and took seven cycles of the starter and fuel pump before it restarted. If the engine still will not start, try several cycles of cranking the engine for 10 seconds and allowing the pump to run after each crank attempt. As a last resort, bleeding the fuel lines may be necessary. Begin at the filter and continue along the fuel line to the injector pump until all air is purged. Torque the banjo bolt to 18 ft-lbs.

My Freightliner ran out of fuel once( I did not think it was out of fuel kept on cranking the starter) and once after fuel filter change at mechanics it did not want to start. Both times loosening injector(s) got the air out.

We started with cylinder in front and worked back. Both times by the time the third injector was comming loose the engine would fire up.

Thanks...

Hey all,

Thanks for everybody's help. I ended up finding some of Evan's advice from a previous thread that was a touch more in-depth, went over to his house, spent 15 minutes priming and cranking (it took more than 3 or 4 times apiece) and finally got fuel out of #4, then #1, and finally #3. She tried to fire on numbers 1 &4 before I had number 3 tightened down, but soon as it was tightened, it came right alive. Hopefully he decides to get a 2002 in a couple of months and then this '01 is mine. Oo. Oo. Can't wait!!!

Thanks again.

Later, Josh.

fuel prime

just checked in-- If you lose prime / or run out of fuel -- simple to start... Some methods took longer to read than bleed!

Crack any 3 lines you can get to easiest. Line wrench works best-but open end will do you just have to pick the ones you can get on. slite tap on injector line to unseat.

by cracking i mean just loose enough to unseat the line and about 90 deg's from finger tight.

Now run the starter and it will light- Miss-it but light. jump out and tighten down the lines and it should smooth out with cracking the throttle rod off idle once or twice. .

Works on a Cat- also

it will spirt a little fuel on the chrome covers.

Works best with injector lines 1-2-3 best!! / or 4-5-6
