Hello Guys,

I just helped my friend buy a 93 4x4 xcab auto w/170k miles. What a slug. seems to run fine but a slug. first we need to change housings what is the stock housing on this truck? will probably go with a 12cm but not sure on wastgated or not. i need any info from the masters on turning up the pump not to the max but need some increase and we are looking for some used or decent price guages (boost and egt) also does anyone have info or diagrams on advancing the timing as Jim leonard did this on my old 89 and it was a huge power gain.

any suggestions on what to look for/ do to this 93 would be appreciated

Thanks

DD

Dan, diagnosing it long distance is going to be a bit frustrating, as there are some tests that are difficult to explain.

1 Does the truck good good AFTER you get the engine wound up good? or is it still slow?

If it is still slow, then you need to find out of there's any boost. If there is, then the air/fuel control diaphragm is stuck in the low fuel position.

2. A failed torque converter can cause the truck to be very weak getting going and take a lot of power to climb even a weak grade. It helps to downshift, but even with power, it won't go good at all. Of course, the transmission will heat like crazy...

3. Timing. If the engine is quiet and will puff blue smoke when cold, then the timing is probably retarded, and it will also be very weak running. It seems to improve when hot in this case.

Changing turbos doesn't improve full speed horsepower, but it does make it more responsive at low speed. Changing injectors is your best means of adding horsepower.

This 93 was a dog when I first got it also, good for bargaining though!! LOL

Firstly the linkage to the throttle was worn and loose, could only get 2400 RPM unloaded, adjusted that up. Next the Air filter was pretty grungy, K&N'd that. Then adjusted the valves, the exhausts were out by as much as 0. 006". Then "tweeked" the pump, now that fixed alot of the low end stuff. Lastly I had the timing set, it was out by 9°!!! That really helped acceleration.

Next are performance mods, but with just these things I've got the same RWHP as a new PSD or CTD Auto.

Get the engine tuned to factory specs, then add the performance mods after you try it. Some people are fine with just a good tune up, some like me, need some more umph!!!

Stock housings on the 93's are the 18. 5 cm2, a 14 cm2 is a good fit for the 250hp and up guys, some with less will use the 12cm2 housing. Depends on whether you are gonna drag race or drag weight. LOL.

Hope this helps.
