Hi all,

I just put in some Di Prcol gauges in my 2001 with the 6 speed with the HO engine.

I followed the directions exactly and placed the thermocouple

in the exhaust manifold.

I took the truck for a test drive and was lets say surprised!

:--)

Empty, just my generator probably less then 200 pounds

and my 5th wheel hitch is all that was in the truck

so it basically had no weight to speak of.

I pull out and give it about half throttle in all the gears

My EGT I always over 1000 to 1300 degrees (I let off) !!!!

I wasn't beating the truck at all, was pretty easy on it I though.

My boost was maybe 10 to 12.

I go down the highway 6th gear, flat land, not pulling anything

and my EGT are at least 850 or more at 75mph !!!!!!!!!!!!

My question, is this normal???? Cause if it is I can't even hook

up my 5er !

HELP!!!!!!!!!

what all do you have done to the truck?

1300* is no problem...

just because you can't pull your 5th wheel over the Divide at 80mph doesn't mean you can't pull it...

if you haven't already, put a free flowing exhaust and air intake setup on it... those will help EGT's a good deal.

high egt are normal for running up to speed. High EGTs may be your driveing style too. Try reving up more. When are you getting the boost #'s you posted? They may be low. What is your WOT boost?

ya a 6 speed.

I'm leaving on a trip with the 5er tomorrow

and just want to be a little more comfortable with these

temps because they just seem high.

remove the muffler and put a BHAF filter on it... that'll help EGT's considerably and cost you less than $100...

what elevation are you at?

you'll be fine w/ the 5er, just control the temps w/ your right foot, and experament running in a lower gear and see what it does for EGT's.

Forrest

you're over a mile high... that's going to contribute to higher EGT's right there...

also, I think 2000-2200 is kinda low for a 24v. just cruising through traffic, I usually shift my 12v around 2300-2500.

RPMs

When pulling with your 5vr in tow, keep the RPMs around 2000 which will in turn keep your boost up and your EGTs in check. Under heavy throttle my sweet spot is 2200-2300 RPMs and my comfort EGT level is 1150 MAX. Others will say 1200-1250 all day long but I'm more comfortable at 1150 with a little bit of a buffer. Keep us posted on your results.

Clay :D

Your temps sound normal, which is to say I was running about the same prior to my serious mods.

1300-1400 for very breif encounters (under 5 seconds) is OK. Running all day at 1150 is OK but would make me nervous as heck.

Better air intake, lose the muffler, and a boost fooler will help alot. If you still have the EGT issue with the 5er, larger exhaust and Water/Meth injection for towing. Of course, if you are going to spend the money on a boost fooler, may as well go a little farther and get a timing box as well. Stay away from Edge if you plan on using it for towing. Way too much timing for heavy loads with a HO engine. Diesel Dynamics has a re-programed Edge EZ version that is not nearly as aggressive.

But now the problem is now you have stepped on the slippery slope of BOMBing.

EGTs

Under heavy throttle my sweet spot is 2200-2300 RPMs and my comfort EGT level is 1150 MAX.

Sticks.....

Just to confirm what I was saying... ... 1150 is my MAX not what I would be pulling at all day. Some folks on this board feel that under 1250 or at 1250 all day is fine. Not me! 1150 is my MAX & not continious by any means.

I do however have an Auto with 3. 5s & am running 285's which doesn't help my cause either. I'm a little paranoid when it comes to EGT's but with my setup I do have to pull at that temp on occasion.

Clay :)

Get an ez or a comp. They will allow you to run higher boost without setting engine codes. They also say they increase the timing which is suppose to lower egt's if I remember correctly.
