I need some help finding the right tool to use on the NV5600 filler plug. It looks like a large hex head, so I need to go buy one. What size is it? Also, what size is the hex head needed for the 271 transfer case. I want to change the oils but can't get the filler plugs out. They are not like the differentials that take a standard 3/8 drive extension. TIA

17mm alan wrnch for the 5600. ya can get a bolt that fits a 17mm wrench and double nut and use as a wrench to remove plug instead of buying allen wrnch

I just dug through my nuts and bolts till I found a nut that would fit (SAE). I Just stuck it in the hex shaped plug and used a socket to turn the nut.

I'd like to dope-slap the jerk that decided to make it an allen type (instead of regular) plug. Everybody who decides to pull the thing out, has to figure out how and with what they will do it.

I bought a male socket, 17mm from AutoZone, here in Phoenix. It was only a couple of bucks, as I recall. It's made by Powerbuilt and is called a "VW, BMW, Porsche Drain Plug" #648438. Hope this helps. Joe.

I found a 17mm allen wrench at my local auto parts store. It was labeled "VW Transmission Filler & Drain Plug Wrench" made by KD Tools, $6. 50. Also you can do a google search for "17mm hex. "

BTW, my truck came with all the fluids full!
