Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Possible reasons truck won't start?

I was pulling the injectors to install a new set. The #2 injector was covered in oil and had black burnt build up at the copper gasket. I've never seen this before. I am going to do a compression test, but does anyone know what would cause this? This truck has 102K miles on it. 1997, 2500 4x4.

I think I figured it out

The injector hold down nut's o-ring was alomost gone. The oil filler had been relocated on top of the #1 vlalve cover. when pouring oil into the engine it can run on top of the injector, seeping into the injector barrel, filling it with oil. Anyone ever seen an oil filler relocated to the valve cover? I dont particularly like it that way, but that seems to be where it is.

How much trouble would it be to put the oil filter back where it belongs? It seems to me that it would really be in the way relocated like that.

Joe:

I think he is referring to the oil filler tube. Non-Dodge apps. often use number one or two valve cover that has the filler plug/cap from the oem design and a threaded boss in the valve cover to use the cap as on our trucks. This saves some money, but won't work with the hokey Dodge sheetmetal/facia cover.

The other popular option was to use our oem design and not have the filler ext. (cap threaded into the elbow on the gear housing cover. ) Makes having a funnel to add oil a must have, even if you are a good "shot. "

My thoughts are someone liked this and changed it out, maybe Abomb is the second owner and the engine/head was changed out?

Leaky valve cover retention bolts and valve cover gaskets do the same thing.

Good luck

Andy

Don't feel bad Joe! I was torq'ing a head the other day and between worn out contact lenses, allergy meds and water eyes, I was struggling too!

picture of oil filler

Here is a picture of the oil filler cap. I dumped the old oil out and have not put new oil in. I think it will take alot of time to get the oil in.

One more picture

One more picture. Hope you can see how the oil could run into the injector. It is the only way I can come up with that would get oil in the injector barrel housing. If anyone has any other ideas, please disclose. Thanks for any imput.
