Where to buy Edge EZ for a 2003??

Blue Chip...NO BOX WAR...just the facts

My son has a 2001 1500 Dodge 4x4, with a 318 (couldn't afford the Cummins at that time) and it only has 71,000 easy miles on her. It has a terrible drowling sound from te htranny and it's going to be taken to a Cottman Dealer in Vancouver, Wa today. http://www.cottman.com/centers/index.cfm -

My son is out of town next week so this is the time to have it fixed. It's a 5 speed NV Transmission. They think it's a bearing or synchro but can't tell - it shifts fine - and the noise goes away when the clutch is pushed in - however they think the repair will be anywhere from $1800-$2300!!!! I know nobody knows what might be wrong - but what would you guys recommend. I guess I'm wondering if there is a private shop in the Portland Area that would be better... ... or somebody that can do the job for less $$$$

Clutch pushed in? sounds more like a throw out bearing or the pilot bearing Both of these are less than $100, Plus the re&re. I guess the input bearing could be it also. A decent shop should be able to Re& Re in 6 hrs plus the time to fix whats wrong, $2000 sounds high, I'd get a second opinon. Maybe check the fluid for metal shavings or burnt/ dark looking. THis could quite easily be something simple? Good Luck

Sounds like your throw out bearing. Get under the truck and look at where the bell housing hooks to the engine. There is a gap along the bottom, I call it a weep hole. See if the bearings for the throw out bearing are resting in that gap. If there is metal or bearings, most likely it's the throw out. Hope this helps.

hammersley, there are several excellent diesel performance shops in Washington state, one of them would certainly be a better choice( in my opinion). I'm assuming it's an NV 3500? It's not totally dissimiliar to a NV4500. Piers is just across the border in Langley, BC, I'd ask his or Nascar Mark's advice on where to take it.

Look in your past TDR issues for diesel shops in Washington, or hit the Links page here...

"Wouldn't a through-out bearing cause noise when clutch is pushed in (disengaged) rather than when it is out (engaged)?"

You'd think so, but not necessarily. The noise may be a result of a disintigrating bearing turning without a load that would go away when pushed back together when load is applied. It could be as simple as the throwout making a loose contact when not in use as with the pedal up.

hammersley,

I agree with the others that the estimate is excessive. I looked over the website of this Cottman Center and frankly don't like the sound of it. Beware of any repair station that offers simple fixes - i. e. "inspections" and "checkups" and the like with the small print specifying that your bill will depend on what is found. They'll always find something and once your vehicle is apart they'll have you over the barrel. Your only choice will be to take back the disassembled vehicle or agree to the repair. If you want them to put it back together they'll charge you full flat rate IF they agree to do it.

Rip Rook....

is near you. I don't think he does transmission repair... . but with all of his sales contacts, he should know of someone who does.
