Something happened today when i was turning around. I think it is in the shifter linkage in the steering coloumn. Here is how it is . I have no park anymore. Park is now reverse. There is no more notches when I move it from gear to gear. It just slides freely. Drive is now neutral and 2nd and 1st are gone. This is really starting to make me lose it as I have not been able to fix my steering issues yet. Here is a quote from an earlier post about the steering issues. Someone out there in TDR land must have had this happen to them too.

Hooter69 I have had similar problems which have now become much worse. My steering box was leaking and I replaced the seal and it started leaking again, unkown to me on a long tour and did damage to the steering pump as well. here is where the story gets worse. I had the dealership, which has done lots of good work for me before and also deals with alot of diesels, replace the steering pump and the steering box at the same time. I regret dooing this now beacuse I have a steering issue and it makes it alot harder to pinpoint the culprit. Anyways the dealership installed the new steering pump on the truck and the shaft that goes into the vacum pump , damaged the seal, when they did this. After reading on the TDR here I see that these two units should always be attached together on the bench to prevent this from happening. The dealership and even Cummins wants $1300 canadian for a new pump and says that I cant get new seals. After dooing more research on the TDR I contacted John(CPFF) and had a lengthly conversation about these issues. Thanxs again John. He has sourced out the seals and (mongrel) O-rings for both kinds of pumps and for consideribly less than a new pump.

I really do love my truck, but it seems like things are breaking faster than I fix them. The truck is bone stock and babied.

Thanxs in advance Jeff:{

There is probably something wrong with your shift linkage. There is an adjustment lock screw at the bottom of the rod that goes from the steering column to the bell crank. It may be loose. The bracket that holds the bell crank may be loose. The thing to so is start down the linkage and see if you can fine anything wrong.

Sounds like either a motor support loose or a grommet missing in the shift linkage. Raise the hood and watch the shift linkage coming out of the steering col. while someone moves the shift lever up and down through the gears, if you dont see the problem from there, roll under the drivers side of truck (with engine dead and wheels blocked) where you can see the shift linkage and repeat the procedure. A rod comes down from the shifter at end of steering col. and connects to a bellcrank that converts the up/down motion to forward/rearward movement, another rod connects the bellcrank to transmission shifter lever/shaft, the "notches" you refer to are actually inside the transmission on the other end of this rod, the neutral/backup light switch actuator is also inside on this rod, the shifter lever/rod is connected to the manual shifter valve by a linkage which moves it through the different gears/park etc. positions. bg

Thanxs for the reply's guys. The shifter linkage turned out to be a broken bolt, which the dealership fixed for free. They also fixed the leaking vacumn pump with CPFF's seal kit. The steering pump is still causing issues but not a 911 situation. I am gonna make a post about it in the 12 v section.
