Hello all, Have a question, My transmission is "locked up"(converter) When I come to a stop it will kill the engine. The solenoid is not engaged (I removed the connector from the side of the transmission). If I get the truck rolling it will shift, down shift and seem to use the lockup function (Turn on and off) if I am in OD and press the button on the shifter to force third gear it will downshift than loose a little more rpm when it seems to go into lockup third gear... BUT coming to a stop it will stall the engine. Stock converter / rebuilt transmission with 5000 miles, TQ with 20,000 miles? not sure. Fluid looks great, no codes using three key turn method. . Thinking the converter pooped the bed???????

THANKS FOR THE HELP

Converter is definitely the first thing that comes to mind. I have had them pull th eengine way down but not kill it, however, the degree of failure will dictate that.

The only other thing I can think of is a failure in the forward clutches. Does reverse work at all?

I dont know if this will help at all, but it worked for a '94 Cavalier where the converter would lock up, then not unlock when I came to a stop hot, killing the engine. The only way I could get moving was either to make it spin the tires or wait several minutes. It would eventually unlock, then I could start up and go. I unplugged the conveter, added Lucus and drove it for a couple of weeks w/o the lockup. Then I reconnected the converter, and everything worked ok. May or may not help yours, but did this one.

On my '92, I HAVE to put in a bottle of additive when I service the trans or it will NOT behave right, had the same prob on my old diesel suburban. Usually I had best results with Gunk or Lucas. It's not my intention to start a big discussion about additives, this is just what worked for me.

AND THE ANSWER IS??
Problem was the torque converter. changed it out to a PATC triple clutch and back to normal. In the past I had troubles with 2 TCI value single clutch billet. So hate to bag on tci but one wasn't built correctly (missing a bushing, wouldn't lock up) than second one tore up my front pump thus eating up my transmission. They may have there act together but... . Go PATC and no worries
