Bought some VDO Vision guages (EGT, transmission, & boost)the other day. Decided to go ahead and temporarily install the EGT guage while I wait for my 3 guage a-pillar setup to arrive. I got the pyro installed and the wiring hooked up, but the guage doesn't move at all. The multi-tester shows 12+ volts to the guage, but I don't know how to check to see if the pyro is sending the proper signal. What is the typical voltage range for the 400 degree VDO pyro? Also, how do you go about checking the pyro signal using a multi-meter?

My bad luck is that Summit is out of stock on the VDO pyro kits, so I will have to wait about 2 weeks to get a replacement. #ad

When mine was suspect (it turned out to be bad) I put the multimeter on ohms, attached the probes to the leads and used a lighter for a heat source. There should have been a sheet with the thermocouple to give the resistance at different temps. Anyway, without that, you will see the resistance begin to change very quickly once you start to heat it. Remove the heat and the resistance will change quickly in the other direction.

12 Volts is required for the light only!

I'm not sure about VDO,but all the pyros I've dealt with only require 12v for the lighting. If power is applied to the sender,it's sure to fry it. I hope the 400 degree gauge is a typo error,as 400 will be barely over idleing temperature. Good luck

The VDO requires 12-V. There is an internal amplifier that needs power.

Zman,

Most thermocouples used for pyros are "K" type units. They differ slightly, but the average output is ~22uV per degree F. They normally are zeroed @ 32F.

Example... If the temp was 80F, then 80-32=48. 48 X 22uV = 1. 056mV Your meter would read . 001 volts DC. A uV is. 000001 VDC, a mV is . 001 VDC. This is why some gauges use an amplifier, because the signal is so small. If you have a good DVM, you should be able to see if it's working. Email with any ??'s if I can help.

My goof. The 400 degree was for the transmission temp guage. The EGT pyro is matched to the guage and is good for 1600+ degrees. The guage and pyro came as a kit, but for some reason, it didn't include any info on the probe itself.

I'll try the lighter trick and check the ohms. Thanks for the info!

On the back of my DiPricol EGT gauge, there was a small wire connecting the two terminals. That wire was a packing material and had to be removed before the gauge would read anything. The instructions that came with it said nothing about having to remove it. I had to call TST, the seller, to ask them why my gauge was not reading anything and found out I need to pull that wire off. I don't know if the VDO is like that or not, but you might want to check that possibility out.
