:{ i have a 1998 24 valve. Engine runs well. It has some sort of electric glitch that makes it lose power when you are driving. The engine does not stall. If you turn the key off and back on it goes right back to full power. I am not sure what causes this. Someone said the throttle position sensor and another said it needs an injector pump. Seems to me that it would not start or run at all if the pump was bad

When I had my 01 it did that with a faulty injector pump. DC didn't replace it untill they put in a TPS and 2 lift pumps (under warranty).

Get a fuel pressure test , a lot of post talk about the lift pump goes , the truck will still run [ variable ] but with the VP pump pulling from the tank it will shorten the life of the VP pump .
Aso check for codes , you can get some by turnning the key to the run possision 3 times in a row then the dash will give you codes , but the best way is with a scanner .

would one of the computer codes that come on when you cycle the key tell you that a sensor is bad so i can eliminate a few options? its actually my friends truck and i want to find out before i buy it whether i'll be putting a hundred dollars into it or 1100 for an injection pump. im pretty handy but just not too farmiliar with the 24 valves as my other trucks were all 12 valves. thanks

A code does not mean that that part is bad , it is just telling you where to start looking .
If you got a MAP sensor code for example , it could be a leak it the intake system .
If you have an O2 sensor code on a gaser that could be that the engine is not getting the right air/fuel mixture .
The best thing to do with a computor controled viehical is to take it to a reputable shop , or starting taking classes to be a tech. , point being is to spend your $$$ effectively , you can buy a lot of wrong parts that can easly cost more than getting it done right the 1st time .

OK, 1st things 1st, A 98. 5 does not do the 3-key thing that's for Y2K or newer trucks. So to read the codes you need a code reader :{ If you can your hands on a Smarty it has a good code reader built in. If not any other one may do.

Is the Check Engine Light (MIL) is on? If not there may not be a code set. There is a minor code;

" P1693 (M) DTC Detected in Companion Module A fault has been generated in the companion engine

control module.

P1693 (M) DTC Detected in PCM/ECM or DTC

Detected in ECM

A 9Companion DTC9 was set in both the ECM and PCM. "

It means that some thing is wrong some were else (ECU on enigne)

A list of codes can be found at https://www.turbodieselregister.com/forums/showthread.php?t=96634
