ok i have a 1997 ctd. 180,000 miles. bought the truck 8 years ago. i was told it had bd injectors put into it and thats about all iknow for sure.

Anyway on to the story. for the last few months i have noticed that after a long haul the truck stinks outside lkike burnt transmission fluid. None of the drive train including wheel bearings seemed overly hot. i did an oil change but didnt check the level prior to draining and dint think about it at the time but i swear i didnt drain 11 quarts..... anyway

today i had to go through deq. so i went down and ran it through. before going i turned the afc starwheel several turns tighter. i have done this before to help keep the smoke down for the test. i got a 47 the limit is 40 so i failed.

so i went home and checked the air filter it looked very bad. so i removed it went through deq and got a 45. still to much smoke.

through all of this i was noticing that durring the snap test i was seeing some blueish white smoke. . hmmmmm never really noticed it before. so i went home and did some testing if i nail the gas pedal it will rev up and then at 3/4 rpm it will miss a few times and out comes the blueish white smoke... . it just seams wrong first i was thinking valve seals but now i am thinking what about that smell lately could they be connected... maybe a turbo seal??/

would that explain the stench/ bluish smoke / and bad deq??????

what else can i do to help get past deq...

the truck has great awsome power no complaints.

oh yes one other thing 6 months ago herd a strange tapping sound from the motor put in a new fuel filter and the lift pump quited down... ... .

love this truck but lately everything has went wrong. just rebuilt 5 speed last week.

disconnect the boost line to the AFC for the test. you`ll pass every time. Be sure to block the line, or they may hear a hissssss hehh. .

i doubt they`ll look for it.

update.

i tock the afc off this morning the breakout screw was still there. ?? when i got to the plate it was in full forward position for max power. so i am going to put it at 50 % to see what i get. the housing was at about 50 % depending on what i find i may move it toward the casb to reduce pre boost smoke,, i can always put everything back

blows me away that the breakout screw was intact and plate at 100 % forward. someone must have replaced the breakout screw... .

Check your fuel injection pump timing and fuel pressure. Also check for excessive free play side to side on the turbo shaft. Seal could be heading south.

When I modded my plate, I took the breakoff screw out with a small chisel, and light taps. Put it right back in the same way, been there 3 yrs now.

why start moving stuff when the afc boost line will def. do it?

i have always been curious as to what had been done done to my truck and how much effect these adjustments have. mosot of them will be going back after i run the truck through deq.

i did make a few other changes i put in allen bolts to hold the cover on. this way i can remove it with a ball driver without removing the banjo bolt. It hardly takes me any time to get in and change things. also my little stumble / blue smoke is gone.

timing is going to take a slight investment in tools. i have all the data to do the timing i am just not sure i need to do iy. this truck has always had way more power than i need and runs great.

the timing may be the cause of your stumble with the extra fuel, mine was about 4* retarded from spec and was very unhappy when i bought it, i had never herd a diesel backfire like a gasser till then, and i mean a loud backfire if you pushed it when it was stumbling, i advanced it a couple degrees beyond spec and the only time it would pop would be if i gave it too much pedal on the first shift of the day then never again, since i changed my 330 marine injectors for ddpII's i can stand on it dead cold if i wanted to (which i don't)
