cranked up fine, pulled out onto the road, shifted from 2nd to 3rd and truck died. Have inline fuel pump, broke fitting loose just after inline pump and pumps fuel well. Have no fuel pressure guage but when I try to start the engine it just rolls over and the inline pump runs for about 15-20 seconds after I get off the key. Any suggestions?

CHeck you shutoff solenoid.

It's a gold colored can towards the rear of the pump. It may not be staying up. It has to stay up for teh truck to run. You can wire it up witha coat hangar or zipties, but the truck won't shutoff untill it is allowed to fall down.

For the truck to start it has to be pulled up, but it doesn't get pulled up untill teh starter is engaged. After the starter is released a 2nd circuit energizes the solenoid to stay up. If that circuit is weak, the truck may run for a few seconds then die out when the solenoid falls back down.

Also, diesel engines behave sortof how you are describing when they are out of fuel... .

if it's a 24v, and I suspect it is, it sounds like the VP44 died on you---it's normal for the lift pump(inline pump) to run for 20 seconds or so after you turn the key off---but as posted earlier we need year of truck and what modifications you,ve done to it---have you changed the fuel filter lately?? you can crack the (starting from the front and counting towards the rear) injector line nuts on #3, #4 and #5, go crank the engine over for 15 seconds or so and go check to see if you have fuel coming out of them, if you do then button it up and see if it will start---if you have no fuel at those lines after 3 cranking tries then your VP44 is most likely dead---if you can get a code reader to check codes that would be helpful--if your truck is a 2001 or later you can turn the key on and off(don't start it), just turn the key on and off 3 times and some #'s will flash in the odometer--write them down and post the info here-----chris

no fuel = truck no run

FYI you need a code reader for your truck --the key on and off 3 times won't work on the '99---chris

i had a similiar problem like that but my truck would start and somtimes it wouldnt code reader said miscommunication from ecm to injection pump then finally it wouldnt start so put a new pump in and it still did it found out that it was the fuel relay
