Ok yesterday the truck gave me some hard starting problems didn't want to

Last night it didn't had to have g/f's dad hold the shut off solenoid up to start it. This evening went to move the truck to install new $300 solenoid and it starts right up!!

Got issue 38 today and its misleading in one reply it says to test the relay put 12 volts to the red wire while another says put 12 volts to the white wire?

How do I test the relay before I put the $300 (hopefully returnable) solenoid on?

There are three wires. The black one is ground. The white one is pull on. And the red one is hold which should be a lighter gage than the other two. So to test the pull on, put a ground on the black wire and 12 volts on the white. The solenoid should pull up. Once it has pulled then 12 volts on the red wire will hold it in the pulled position after the 12 volts has been removed from the white wire.

go to Radio Shack and get relay part # 275-226

may be listed as part # 2750226

it costs about $6. 00 and will work fine if thats the problem

Sorry I posted my conclusion in my regular post in the 12 Valve forum. It turned out to be the relay. I'm going to school to be a GM Tech (no Diesel schools around here except overpriced Nash. Diesel College) and talked with my teacher about it. I told him that I had let the truck sit all day Tuesday and night it started up just fine when I went to put it in my basement to install the new $333. 27 solenoid.

Well after recieving issue 38 that same day and reading of another members same problem I decided to wait on the install and test the relay in class.

After having told my instructor this he said to go out and take the relay off my truck and bring it into class.

Well 10 minutes later we had it apart and found the burnt contacts. A couple of minutes with a file and we put it back together and no problem since! Except getting my $$ back from DC. Had to wait 10 days after I wrote the check for the part so I won't get my refund until Tuesday of next week! And the dang check already cleared!!#@$%! :-{} #@$%! :-{} #@$%! #@$%!

contacts

Your contacts were burned rather badly for you to have file them but if they weren't try cardboard works as a contact cleaner.

Haven't had any further starting problems since I filed the contacts down. Thanks for the tip though.

Man this is like the 3rd time in 3 months this old thread got drug up?

If the contacts are burnt bad enough to not start then something aggressive like the file is needed. I also took my relay apart and polished the contacts with a Dremel tool and so far 3 months later is still working fine.

Well at first it was EXTREME "I don't wanna... but I will with some (i. e. A LOT) of pedal " starting ... then it just completely gave up on me at my girlfriends house quick call to Will @ BMD 11:30PM his time!! and we jumped to the conclusion of Shutoff Solenoid. However that did make it start! Anyhow lucky for me the same day I purchase the $333 Solenoid I also got issue 38 & another member had the same problem and it was the relay. So I investigated before I installed the solenoid and have since got my $333 back!

But after we took the relay apart and filed the contacts it starts just fine on the first crank although I still have some "hard starting" that has been there since I bought the truck.

Check or just replace the return fuel line under the manifold.
