help! strange problem

my friend is in utah and is having problems with his 03 250hp cummins. it has a major power loss (25-30 mph), blacksmokes when accelerating and then cuts out. but when it is at an idle and you rev it up, all it will turn is 2000 and whitesmokes horribly. he did the TPS reset and it helped a bit but it isnt right still. it has near 100,000 miles and is BONE STOCK. He has to be in reno by tonight. we called rocky mountain diesel and they said that it would be $200 to look at it but they coundnt communicate with an ECM newer than a 2002?

Getting codes 1st but , and I like to look at the easy 1st , but from what I've read here and simalar posts it sounds like he lost his lift pump and if they keep on driving may lose the main, but I am not real familier with the newer trucks , but codes then check those out.

If it were mine, I would disconnect the batts for 5 minutes or so and see if that resets anything, also a new fuel filter wouldn't hurt anything at this point.

thats the problem there arent any codes showing (turning key on and off 3 times) or check engine lights. also the black smoke under load is really confusing

Have him check all of the boost hoses. On the 3rd gen's it won't run much if at all with a bad LP. Also check the air cleaner and fuel filters. Also check the fuel filter canister for water since it could be a bad load of fuel also.
